ELIZABETH (BETTY) MARGARET GYSELMAN (nee CLARK) 1922 - 2002 Peacefully, following a lengthy illness, it is with deep sadness that we announce the death of Betty Gyselman on August 1, 2002 at the Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg. Betty will be lovingly missed by her family, many friends, and especially her devoted dog, Cara. Left to mourn her passing are her husband Harry, son Earl and his wife Allison of Hornby Island, BC, son Eric, his wife Janet and grandsons, Bradford and Matthew of Niverville, MB. Betty was predeceased by her brother Jim Clark of Winnipeg and is survived by her sister Ethel Laidlaw of Winnipeg. Betty was born in Windsor, ON to Earl and Florence Clark but moved to Winnipeg as a young child. She grew up on Morley Street in Riverview. After graduating from Kelvin High School, Betty worked for a number of years in Eatons Mail Order Department in downtown Winnipeg. She married Harry in 1946 and left Eatons to raise her two sons. Betty lived all of her married life in Crescentwood, first on Fleet Street and then on Dudley Crescent. She and Harry moved to the Wellington on Grant Avenue in the spring of 2001. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Betty spent her summers with her sons at the family cottage at Falcon Lake. Once the boys were on their own, the cottage was sold so that she and Harry could travel. And travel they did, seeing most of North America from Alaska to Newfoundland to California to Florida by road as well as more exotic countries like Portugal, Mexico, New Zealand, the Caribbean and the South Pacific. Betty loved to meet people and was notorious for picking up young hitchhikers while on some cross-country adventure. Often these young travellers would be with her and Harry for days ending up back at the family home for a shower, hot meal, and warm sleep before she would drive them back out to the Trans-Canada highway and send them on their way. Betty also loved to garden and the first rose of the season was always a call for celebration. Cooking especially for family and friends was another passion and a new recipe found in a magazine or book was all that was needed to organize a dinner. Bettys family would like to sincerely thank the staff of Victoria and Seven Oaks Hospitals and the Health Sciences Centre not only for their professional care but also for their compassion towards Betty and her family. Following Bettys wishes, a public Service will not be held but we hope that her many friends and family scattered across the country will take a moment to remember and cherish her life. If friends and family so wish, donations in Bettys name may be made to the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of of Canada, 306-2265 Pembina Hwy, Winnipeg, MB (telephone: (204) 231-2115).
