Date of Passing: Jul 29, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryJANET HUNTER ACKROYD (nee HUGHES) With courage and dignity, Janet Hunter Ackroyd passed away on July 29, 2002. Janet is survived by her daughter, Lyn Hanna; son, David Ackroyd; daughter-in-law, Charlene Zelanko; grandchildren, Michael, Jenith, Laurel, Stephen, Vincent, David, Tanya, Jude; their spouses; 13 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews. Janet was predeceased by her beloved husband Ernest; son James; sisters, Nell and Isabelle; son-in-law, Bill Hanna and great-grandson, Brooks. Janet was born in Scotland in 1909 and immigrated to Canada. She met Ernest Ackroyd in Ninette, MB. and they married and settled in Winnipeg to raise their three children. Janet worked in the food service industry for most of her career. She managed the CNIB cafeterias and subsequently served as Manager of Cafeterias for the Health Science Centre, till her retirement, well past the age of 65. Janet received many awards for her service from several professional organizations, including the Canadian Food Services Supervisors and Canadian Restaurant Association. Janet was instrumental in developing the Food Services, Hygiene and Sanitation courses at Red River Community College. Known as "Granny" to all, Janet was generous to a fault, willing to help her family and friends in any way she could. She was also a strong woman with a stubborn streak and would argue her opinions and ideas over a glass of wine or scotch. "Feisty" was a word often used to describe Granny. She was quick to point out less than superior service and food quality to many restaurants, much to the chagrin of family and friends dining with her. Thank you to the staff of Vista Park Lodge and Victoria General Hospital for their support and assistance. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the CNIB in her memory. A memorial service in Janets honour will be held on Friday, August 9 at 2:00 p.m. at Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St., Winnipeg.
