Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryBARBARA JANE SCOTT (nee HOURD) 1944 - 2002 It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved wife, mother, daughter and sister on Saturday, August 3, 2002. Surrounded by family, Barbara passed away peacefully at the Tom Baker Cancer Centre after a nine month battle with Inflammatory Breast Cancer, at the age of 57. Barbaras fortitude, dignity and beautiful smile as she faced her lifes final challenge will forever be an inspiration to all of us. With admiration for her unconditional love we pay tribute to this generous, nurturing, and creative soul. She was a loving wife to Ron, her husband of 38 years, who will miss her dearly. Also left to mourn are her son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Melanie Scott and daughter and son-in-law, Heather and Telis Hobbs. Barbara is also survived by her mother Shirley Hourd; her sisters, Judy (Don) Irving, Susan (Ken) Rogers, Kathy (Rod) Baker, Debbie Hourd, Linda (Mike) Buckner; her brother Bert (Dana) Hourd; nieces, nephews, numerous other relatives, dear friends, colleagues, students, as well as her faithful companion Spooky. She was predeceased by her father Wilbert Ralph Hourd in January, 2000. Barbara was born on December 20, 1944 in Winnipeg where she grew up spending time with her dog Tinker, and singing in the Anglican Church Choir. As a child she also enjoyed Ballet and Highland Dancing, horseback riding, and sewing. In grade five she first met her future husband Ron, and at the age of 16 they were reunited and began dating. In April of 1964 Ron and Barbara were married in Winnipeg where they resided until 1965. Inspired by a honeymoon to California the two decided to move to Los Angeles. The following year they decided to come back to Canada and make Calgary their permanent home where their children were born. Barbara worked as a Medical Secretary and a Unit Clerk at the Foothills Hospital before fulfilling her lifelong dream of becoming a mother. Barbara took great pride in her home, including various renovation projects such as meticulously remodelling the deck, creating a perfectly landscaped garden and redesigning a beautiful kitchen. Her many projects, both large and small, were done with great passion and ingenuity that kept them busy for years. Barbara was a gifted artist and enjoyed oil painting; many of these paintings adorn the walls of her and her familys homes. Her other interests included reading, crossword puzzles, knitting and sewing. She loved to dance and enjoyed the company of her many pets over the years. Her passion for children inspired her to attend the U of C to become a kindergarten teacher. After six years, Barbara graduated with distinction in 1991 completing a Bachelor of Education and Diploma in Early Childhood Education. Her teaching career began at Huntington Hills Community Kindergarten where she inspired independence, creativity, and confidence in all her students. Her kindness and passion for learning was infectious to everyone around her including many of her students who have kept in touch through the years. In September 2000 Barbara was excited to accept a position at Catherine Nichols Gunn, where she worked until October of last year. Even though she was only there a short period of time Barbara had such a positive impact on her colleagues and students that they overwhelmed her and her family with their generosity, support and friendship in the past nine months. Last summer Ron and Barbara enjoyed an Alaskan Cruise and this past spring they purchased a condo in Sicamous, BC where they were able to spend time together. The marriage of her son Steve in April 2001 and her daughter Heather in October 2001 were two of her proudest moments of parenthood. Most recently Barbara was thrilled to have witnessed the birth of her nephew in June and be named godmother. We are so proud, honoured and blessed to have known and loved such a beautiful woman. We have learned a great deal from her and she will forever be missed by all those whose lives shes touched.
