JESSIE LOGAN SHEWCHUK On February 12, 2002, Mrs. Jessie Logan Shewchuk, beloved mother of Dr. Joan Welch, passed away at the age of 84. Besides her daughter, she is survived by her granddaughters, Lauren and Diana Welch; son-in-law Barry Allum; her adored nephew Tom Scott of Calgary and his daughter Lisa Anne. Jessie was predeceased by her first husband Michael Dorosh, who was killed in action in Italy during the Second World War, and by her second husband Samuel Shewchuk in 1958. Jessie was also predeceased by her loving parents, Thomas and Sophie Logan; sister Anne Scott; brother-in-law John Scott; sister-in-law Rose Shewchuk; brother Stanley Logan; and by her oldest sister Mary, who died in childhood. Jessie was born August 17, 1917, in Winnipeg, the third surviving child in her family. Her parents had both chosen to come to Canada, after being born and raised in Austria. Her family of origin had an intense loyalty to Canada, which subsequent generations have followed. Despite the difficulties of growing up during the Great Depression, Jessie excelled scholastically. Graduating at the "head of her class" to quote her Isaac Newton High School yearbook, she was recruited by the Bank of Montreal to join their company. Fluent in three languages, in addition to her mathematical and accounting abilities, she became a great asset to their corporation, rising to the position of assistant manager in the 1960sa rare accomplishment for a woman, at that time. Jessie always regarded the Bank of Montreal in the highest terms. In the midst of the Great Depression, they gave her a first job. After she was widowed, they gave her a second career. She loved her Bank. She enjoyed the financing and investing challenges, but most of all she really enjoyed dealing with her customers. She was always able to simplify and clarify complex banking and accounting problems for her customers. Joan recalls visiting her Mom, at work, at her branch, when a very distraught, harried customer appeared, and said "Thank God, you are here, Jessie. I need your advice." That statement sums it all up, Mommy, I wish you were here. I need your advice. I love you. I miss you. - Love, Joanie. According to her wishes, cremation has taken place. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, August 17 at 3:00 p.m. at Holy Family Cemetery, 4355 Main St. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
