ALICE NELSON (nee BROADBENT) November 20, 1920 - July 24, 2002 At her request, no services were held for Alice Nelson, 81, of Coos Bay, OR. Interment is at Fairhaven Memorial Park, Santa Ana, CA. She was born November 20, 1920, in Glossop, Derbyshire, England, to Herbert and Gertrude (Doxon) Broadbent. She died peacefully, at home July 24, 2002, in Coos Bay. Alice moved from England to Winnipeg, Canada at age four. She married Leonard Allan Nelson on August 12, 1950, and they moved to Southern California in 1952. She worked as a medical secretary and later took time off to raise a family. After the death of her husband, she returned to Winnipeg in 1968 and continued working as a teacher, then as a medical secretary for the Cancer Treatment and Research Institute until her retirement in 1985. She had lived in the Coos Bay area for the past 15 years. Alice had numerous hobbies, including gardening, needle arts, oil painting and travelling. She was a member of Emmanuel Episcopal Church and the Order of the Eastern Star, Jephthah Chapter No. 22. She is survived by her daughters, Lorna Nelson of Coos Bay and Patricia and Grant Kaufmann of Winnipeg; grandsons, Philip Nelson of Coos Bay, and Kyle and Tyson Kaufmann of Winnipeg; and numerous relatives in Canada and England. She was preceded in death by her husband and brothers, Tom and Herman (Mike) Broadbent. The family suggests memorial contributions to the Canadian Diabetes Association or charity of choice.
