EIRIKUR (ERIC) HJARTARSON Peacefully on August 12, 2002, at the Lakeshore General Hospital, with his niece Linda at his side, Eric Hjartarson passed away at the age of 84 years. Eric was born on May 8, 1918, at Asham Point. The family moved to Peonan Point in 1924. Eric grew up helping on the farm, even while attending grade school in Steep Rock. In 1946 he married Hilda Bittner and they lived on the Point until 1959 when they bought their home in Steep Rock, but Eric continued ranching on the Point with his two brothers until his retirement in 1979. He retired, but in his heart he never left the Point, and returned to visit as often as he could. He enjoyed visiting with people and travelling with his wife Hilda. He was an active member of the Steep Rock United Church, and the local Seniors Club. He was a proud member of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and a member of the Order of the Eastern Star. Eric and Hilda established a Drug/Alcohol Awareness Scholarship Fund at Ashern Central School. He leaves to mourn his passing, sisters-in-law, Dorothy and Laura Hjartarson of Winnipeg; and numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He was predeceased by his loving wife Hilda; his parents, Gudmundar and Sigrun; brothers, Hjartur, Oli, Haddi, Eyvi, Gummi; sisters, Sigga, Runa, and Begga. Friends and relatives may pay their respects between 7:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 15 at the Arnason Funeral Home in Ashern. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m on Friday, August 16 at the Faulkner Community Hall, with viewing prior to the service. Rev. Stan Fowke officiating. Interment to follow in the Faulkner Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be Philip Hjartarson, Gerald Wowchuk, Ronald Bittner, Deryl Meisner, Alfred Morriseau, and Ken Hoff. Everyone in attendance may consider themselves honorary pallbearers for Eric. Many thanks to family and friends who visited Eric both at home and in the hospital. Thanks to the Home Care workers and staff, Dr. Berrows and staff at Lakeshore General Hospital, for their special care and kindness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Lakeshore Hospital Guild, care of Runa Mangl, Ashern, MB R0C 2E0. Arrangements in care of: Arnason Funeral Home Ltd. Ashern - Lundar (204) 768-2072
