Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryMITCHELL OAKES With sadness, we announce the sudden passing on August 11, 2002, of Mitchell Oakes, with his daughter and son-in-law by his side. Beloved husband, father and grandfather, Mitch leaves his wife of 61 years, Violet; his children, Lorna (Murray) McKnight, and Mitch (Marg) Oakes; and grandchildren, Robert, Lindsay, and Craig McKnight, and Jennifer (Garrett) Verch, Melanie, Allison and Rebecca Oakes. Mitch was born May 16, 1916 in Winnipeg. His mechanical/technical abilities showed up early as he loved to make radios in his basement workroom as a boy. This lifelong hobby led him to a satisfying career - first as a radio technician, then later as a television technician - for over 40 years with the Hudsons Bay Company. It was also through The Bay that he met his lifelong mate, Vi, at the company Rifle Club. Mitch was not only an exceptional Mr. Fix-It, but also a great builder - rec rooms, a garage, and best of all - a lovely cottage at the lake that his kids and grandkids enjoy immensely. Dad loved it at the lake, even though this year the mosquitoes were getting to him! Well miss his quirky sense of humour, his supervising in the kitchen, his enjoyment of family dinners, lunch dates at Burger King, his love for his family and his unique perspective on life. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 16 at 2:00 p.m. at St. Philips Anglican Church, 240 Tache Ave., with reception to follow. If friends so desire, donations may be made in Mitchs memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 301-352 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB R3B 2J1.
