ELLA BELTON (nee KRUHMIN) Ella Belton, widow of the late Charlie Jennings Belton, formerly of Portage la Prairie, MB, passed away peacefully at the Brandon Regional Health Centre on August 13, 2002, in her 90th year. Ella was born on the family farm near Sifton, MB, on December 17, 1912, to Gedert and Amelia Kruhmin who had immigrated to Canada in 1900 from Latvia. Ella was the youngest of a family of five: John, Edward, Arthur and Clara. She received her education at Fairville country school which was the centre of their educational, social and spiritual life; the school sometimes being used for their Lutheran church services. In 1935, she married schoolteacher Charlie Belton, a widower with a six-year old daughter, Ruth. They began their married life in Gladstone, MB. To this family unit, three sons were born: Raymond, 1937, Linwood, 1939, and Wayne, 1940, all in Gladstone. In 1940, they moved to Portage where Charlie was employed in the Post Office. During the Second World War, while Charlie was in the Airforce Postal Corps, Ella moved with her family back to Sifton to be near her family. After the war, they returned to Portage where she resided until 1994, before moving to Hobbs Manor in Brandon. Mom was a member of McKenzie United Church, Portage, and a life member of the U.C.W. there. Her family and home were first and foremost in her life. Her many talents included being an excellent cook, meticulous housekeeper, and an accomplished sewer. She enjoyed craft-work, her garden, bridge playing and entertaining. She took home many ribbons from the Portage Exhibition for her vegetable canning and handwork. After Dads retirement they did a fair bit of travelling, east and west and south into the U.S. Ella was predeceased by an infant brother John; her father in 1951; her son Wayne in 1954; her mother in 1955; her husband in 1982; her brother Art in 1983; her son Linwood in 1987; and her sister Clara in 1993. She leaves to mourn and will be sadly missed by brother Edward of Mississauga, ON; her son Raymond (Shirley) of Saskatoon, SK; her daughter Ruth (John) Bilowus of Brandon, MB; five grandchildren, Hope (Gary) Shotbolt of Brandon, Debra (Doug) Swanson of Thunder Bay, ON, Charlene Campbell of Saskatoon, Lori (Jim) Ward of Mississauga, Dwayne Belton of Prince Albert, SK; four great-grandchildren, Pte. Christopher Wiebe of C.F.B. Wainwright, AB, Ryan (Cristy) Campbell of Mississauga, Brittany Swanson of Thunder Bay, and Nicholas Shotbolt of Brandon; one great-great-granddaughter Chelsea Campbell of Mississauga. There are also several sisters-in-law, nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends who will miss her greatly. We are very grateful this loving person has found her final rest in the arms of her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. A memorial service will be held at the Brockie Donovan Chapel, Brandon on Tuesday, August 20 at 1:00 p.m. with Rev. John Nesbitt of Trinity United Church officiating. Interment will follow at Hillside Cemetery in Portage la Prairie. In lieu of flowers, if friends wish, donations may be made to the Alzheimer Society of Manitoba, 437 - 9th Street, Brandon, MB, R7A 4A9, or to a charity of ones choice.
