Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryARNOLD ALPHONSE MATTHYS Peacefully at his home, August 15, 2002, with his wife Angele at his side, Arnold Matthys passed away at the age of 79 years. Arnold was born February 27, 1923 at St. Jan De Eremo, Belgium. In 1946, he married Angele De Zutter. In the next few years, they had two children, Anita and Rudi. They immigrated to Canada in 1953 and farmed for five years at Lenore, MB, where their second daughter, Sonja was born in 1958. They moved to a farm outside of Manitou and farmed there until he suffered a stroke in 1980. They moved into their present home in Manitou in 1981. During the last 17 years, they had many good times going south for five months every winter, and enjoying their summer in Manitou. He leaves to mourn his passing his wife Angele; his daughter Anita (Luc Vanwynsberghe) son Rudi (Beverley Odlum) and Sonja (Ralph Mahar) his grandchildren, Cindy (Brian Spurrill), Angie (Mike Mahar), Randy (Deanna Chenier), Shelley Peters (nee Matthys), Shannon Matthys, Chelsea Mahar and Tim Mahar; great-grandchildren, Taylor Spurrill, Ashlyn and Austin Mahar, Ryan and Kelsey Peters. He is predeceased by his parents, Jules and Emily Matthys; and brothers, Arsene and Wilfred Matthys. He is survived by one brother, Ashter Matthys; five nieces and nephews; and one sister-in-law, Marie Louise Matthys. Arnold loved to sing and loved the jamborees while down south in the winter. He loved a good joke and was always ready to have a good time with family and friends. He had a love of nature, a keen interest in current events, and always kept up on the news, He will be sadly missed by all who held him most dear. Funeral service will take place on Monday, August 19 at 11:00 a.m. at the St. Patricks Catholic Church in Manitou. Interment to follow in St. Leons Cemetery.
