PROFESSOR CARL ROBERT NELSON JR. On Saturday, August 17, 2002, Carl Robert Nelson Jr., beloved husband of Colleen, passed away at home at the age of 69 years. He was born in Duluth, MN on October 6, 1932. He lived there with his parents, Carl Sr. and Margaret, and his younger brother, Willard. Carl moved to Minneapolis in the late summer of 1950. He started work on his undergraduate degree in Architecture at the University of Minnesota. At the U of M, he met and married Colleen Ann Helgeson. After this, he took his MArch degree at MIT, winning a Fulbright Scholarship in 1956. He then moved to Italy where he and Colleen lived while he studied at the University of Rome for nearly a year. He taught at the University of Illinois for five years and at Notre Dame University for one year. In 1963, Carl and Colleen moved to Winnipeg, MB, where he has taught in the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Manitoba ever since. He has been honoured by both students and staff for teaching excellence and has recently been named Professor Emeritus. Carl loved his garden especially his fountain, which held all the rocks he had collected from around the world. He was a master woodworker and he enjoyed making wooden toys and furniture for all his grandchildren and children. The houses he designed are richly detailed and invariably comfortable. He was also an excellent human being with a generous heart and a great wealth of knowledge, which he shared with everyone. Carl leaves to grieve his many friends and colleagues, students, his brother Willard (Jeannie) of Minneapolis; his wife Colleen; and his sons, Chris (Karen) of Toronto, Wade (Sandy) of Duluth, John (Pamela), Patrick (Hollene) of Winnipeg; daughters, Mary (Peter) Nemeth, Kathleen and partner Cory Lussier of Winnipeg, Tina (Happy) Hill of Los Angeles; grandchildren, Jordan and David Nelson, Rachel and Issak Nelson, Alexis and Stephanie Nemeth, Jessica and Jennifer Myskiw-Nelson and Jazz and Dakota-Carl Hill. A memorial service will be held on Friday, August 23 at 11:00 a.m. at Holy Rosary Parish, 510 River Avenue. NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
