JANET ISABELLE PAXTON BERKOWSKI It is with deep sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing on Thursday, August 22, 2002 of Janet Berkowski (nee Paxton) at the Riverview Health Centre after a brief, courageous struggle with cancer. Janet was predeceased by her mother Agnes Tennant Paxton; father John Paxton; and dearest brother John (Jack) Paxton. Born October 5, 1931, Janet engaged life on her own terms. Her enduring pride was in her family; her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Her career as an administrative assistant included work at the Health Sciences Centre and Manitoba Cancer Foundation. Janet believed art was a gift, and as a talented artist herself, she was generous in presentation of her art to others. Her engaging charm was best employed in her tireless advocacy on behalf of those who needed her help (whether they knew it or not). Some of her causes included the Manitoba Society of Seniors, the Association of Union Retirees, and her notable presentations to the Manitoba Government on Family Law Reform in the mid-70s. Always known for her sense of humour and wit, her most potent weapon was a threat to perform the scandalous bubble dance. Janet took her illness in stride and maintained her sense of humour throughout. Her sunny disposition invited good care, and the family will always be grateful to the staff team at Health Sciences Centre (GH4) for their efforts. The family also wishes to thank Janets many friends who visited her in hospital, and those who also contributed to Janets "Potluck in the Park" on August 15. Janet is survived by her three children, Rae Anne (Blair), Bob, and Jack (Carrie) as well as two nieces, Hope and Barbara in Ontario. Her enduring legacy and pride is her grandchildren, Julie (Drew) Badger, Jackie, Ben (Sara) and Bob, Jr.; and her great-grandchildren, Dylan and Hayden. It is a wonderful thing, a mother; other people may love you, but only a mother understands, she works for you, looks after you, loves you and forgives you, whatever you may do, the only hurt she ever gives you is to die and leave you. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Hope Centre Inc., G-431 Thames Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R2L 0V4 or the Childrens Wish Foundation (Manitoba Chapter), 350 St. Mary Ave., Winnipeg, MB, R3C 3Z7. Cremation has taken place and the celebration of Janets life will be held in Sparling United Church, 1609 Elgin Ave. West (at Worth Street) on Wednesday, August 28 at 10:00 a.m. WOJCIKS ALL BELIEFS & FAITHS FUNERAL CHAPEL & CREMATORIUM 897 - 4665
