Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemorySTANLEY JOHNSTON May 13, 1914 - August 24, 2002 Peacefully, in the Selkirk General Hospital, on Saturday morning, after a lengthy illness, our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, uncle, and cousin, Stanley passed away at the age of 88. Dad leaves his loving wife Mildred, their seven children and partners, 20 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one brother, one brother-in-law and sister-in-law, several nieces, nephews and cousins. He has gone ahead to prepare a place for them in a better world where there will be no pain or suffering. He was predeceased by his parents, Thomas and Florence; sister Margaret; brothers, Bob and Roy; two infant sisters; two daughters, Dorothy and Heather; and one son Billy. He was born in Young, SK and spent his early years in The Pas, MB. He enjoyed hunting and trapping and had told many stories about this time in his life. There were also many stories about his travels in the 1930s. From 1940 to 1945, he served his country in the Canadian Army. During this time, he met and courted Mildred, also in the Canadian Army. They were married in 1942, and were thought to be the first man and woman in the Army to be married to each other. They celebrated their 60th anniversary with family and friends just over a month ago. In civilian life, he became a carpenter, and took pride in the many tall buildings, bridges, dams, schools, banks, the Winnipeg Concert Hall, the Selkirk Generating Station, that he worked on, and his own home in 1974. At age 66, he retired from 40 years of hard work with the satisfaction they were well lived. He spent many enjoyable times with friends and family until recently when the effects of the type of work he did made it necessary to be on oxygen 24 hours a day. His children and their families were his pride and joy, and he loved his time with them. Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held in Little Britain United Church, about a mile north of Lockport, MB on Highway 9. The service will be on Saturday, August 31 at 2:00 p.m., with Rev. Christine Brigette officiating. A reception in his honour will follow in the church hall. A special thanks to the doctors, nurses and homecare workers for the loving care given to Stan in the past few months. Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 343. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his name to the charity of choice. God Bless You Stan! Build us a better world to live in! Gilbart Funeral Home, Selkirk, in care of arrangements.
