ROBERT ALEXANDER DOORENBOS November 17, 1928- August 20, 2002 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father and grandfather. After a courageous battle with cholesterol disease, Robert passed away in the Health Sciences Centre with his loving wife Anna by his side. Robert is survived by Anna, his wife of 40 years; his daughter, Christine (Chuck) Glover and his granddaughter, Mallory; his son, Robert (Cathy) and grandchildren, Brian and Monica; his sister, Henriette Doorenbos in Holland; his sister-in-law, Katherina Poulus in Holland; nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his father, Dr. William Doorenbos; his mother Henriette Doorenbos-Kepper; his brother, William Henry. Robert was born on November 17, 1928, in Alexandria, Egypt, the youngest of three children. When the Second World War broke out in Europe, his family moved to Java, Indonesia, where they were all interned in a Japanese prison camp. After the war, Robert returned to Holland with his family. He completed his education, earning a degree in architectural design. Robert, his wife and young family immigrated to Canada in 1967. From 1971 he was employed as a Project Scheduler for INCO Thompson Division. He worked there for 23 years before his retirement in 1993. He was well liked and respected by management and coworkers. Robert was a "gentle" man with a great zest for life. A self taught artist, he inspired many upcoming artists in Thompson. He helped found Studio 55, an artists group in Thompson. Robert had a great sense of humour. He loved gardening. He took great pride in growing all his annual bedding plants and keeping his amaryllis over from year to year creating a winter garden in the living room. Robert loved birds and cats. He left a legacy in Thompson with his commercial and residential architectural designs. He was involved as a volunteer in many different organizations and clubs with the highlights being the 4H Club, Thompson Folk Festival, and Heritage North Museum. He and his wife operated a small bed and breakfast for more than ten years. He enjoyed meeting the guests who came from around the world. Robert was a member of the Free Masons Fraternity. In September his 50 year membership pin will be given posthumously from the Grand Lodge, MB. Cremation has taken place. A Masonic funeral service will be held on September 12 at 2:00 p.m. in the St. Lawrence Hall, Thompson, MB. If friends so desire donations in Roberts name may be made to a charity of their choice or to the Winnipeg Art Gallery. His wife, Anna, would like to thank Mary Kerr and Rev. Brian Rountree who spent time with him during his final hours, and the surgeons, Dr. H. Fong and Dr. J. Koulack and the staff at the Health Sciences Centre for their compassion and care. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Boardman/Northland Funeral Home, Thompson, MB.
