TERRY YATES Terry Yates passed away suddenly on August 23, 2002, at the family cottage at Dauphin Beach, at the age of 61. Terry was born in Calgary, AB, and raised in Watrous, SK, and Regina, SK, where he attended high school. He joined the RCMP for two years, but left for Beaver Lumber in 1963. It was while working for Beaver in Portage la Prairie, MB, that he met his wife Hazel. They were transferred to Reston, MB, and Russell, MB, to manage Beaver Lumber stores before coming to Dauphin, MB, in 1968. In 1971 he became partners with Gordon and Stan McMunn and opened the building supply store, McMunn and Yates. The business grew steadily and today there are nine McMunn and Yates stores in Manitoba. Terry also had a hand in other business initiatives and over the years had investments in the Dauphin Herald, Ready-Mix, Westman Plastics, the Dauphin Golf and Country Club and a land development company. He was known for his honesty and integrity in his business dealings. Terry was a community-minded person. He was a strong supporter of the Dauphin Golf and Country Club in its first years of operation and one of the early promoters of Dauphin Countryfest. He was a past director of the Parkland Regional Health Authority and former board member of the Dauphin and District Community Foundation. He was involved in several service clubs, including the Lions. Terry was always willing to donate his time, money and commitment to the community. At the time of his death, Terry was also serving on the board of Rice Capital Management, with its head office in Winnipeg, MB. Terry was a man who liked challenging himself and truly enjoyed learning. His great curiosity meant that he was always asking people about themselves and their work. This easy way with people meant that he had a great many friends. He was a trusted confidante and sounding board for many, many people. He gave advice in a quiet and unassuming way to people in Dauphin and many in the retail lumber business in Canada sought out his opinion. Terry was intense at work and equally intense at play. He curled for many years and was named a life member of the Dauphin Mens Curling Club. When his knees gave him difficulty, he took up golfing, bowling, swimming and aerobics. He loved to read and had shelves of personal development and business management books. Terry loved his wife and family immensely and took great joy in his grandchildren. His role of Grandpa delighted him. He was thrilled by the birth of his first granddaughter and spent many hours alone with his two grandsons. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Hazel; daughter Rhea (husband Paul Chard) son Jason (wife Laura) three grandchildren, Riley; Lawson and Bronwyn; one sister Cinda; brothers-in-law, Walter (wife Mary), Morris, Orest, and Nestor (wife Kathy) sister-in-law Sylvia (husband Walter) and many nieces, nephews, other relatives and dear friends. Terry was predeceased by younger brother Ronan and by his parents Les and Lorna Yates. Terry Yates touched the hearts of many. He will be sadly missed by all who knew him. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Terrys name to the Dauphin and District Community Foundation, 118 Main St. N., Dauphin, MB, R7N 1C2, or to any charity of your choice. Funeral service was held on Thursday, August 29 at 2:00 p.m. from the Dauphin First United Church. Rev. Ellen Wood officiated and interment was held in the Dauphin Riverside Cemetery. All of Terrys friends were to consider themselves as honorary pallbearers. Active pallbearers were Mark McMunn, Barry Bernhard, Dr. Keith McIver, Dr. Orville Heschuk, Dave Ross and Ferg Evans. The eulogy was given by Barry Greenslade. The congregation was led by organist Sandra Dowhan and church choir. Soloist Simone Pamplin sang "O Lord Most Holy." The Sneath-Strilchuk Funeral Service had care of the arrangements.
