Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryWINTON KERRY NEWMAN In loving memory of Winton Kerry Newman, 72, who died on Monday, September 9, 2002 at the Sudbury Regional Hospital following an eight month battle with cancer. Survived by his wife Betty; daughters, Melissa (son-in-law Charlie Smith) and Kerry; and son Lance; grandchildren, Adrienne, Matthew and Lillian Smith of Ottawa; brother Berkley (wife Edna) of Kenora; brother-in-law Perc Galloway of Winnipeg; nieces and nephews, Susan, Jane and Scott Galloway and Scott and Michael Newman. Predeceased by his son Matthew in 1978, his father Ernie in 1986 and mother Lillian in 1997. Born in Winnipeg on January 16, 1930, Wint grew up in Kenora, ON. He married Betty (nee Morrison) in 1952. He studied at Queens University, graduating with his Bachelor of Science degree (mining engineering) in 1954. After graduating from Queens, Wint began his mining career with Inco in 1954 as an efficiency engineer at Murray Mine in Sudbury. He was a shift boss at the Creighton and Levack Mines from 1956 to 1959. He was transferred to Incos Thompson, MB operations in 1959 as a survey party leader shift boss at the Thompson Mine. From 1959 to 1972, Wint was assigned increasing responsibilities in Thompson including mine division foreman and superintendent of safety, personnel and mines. In 1972 he was appointed assistant general manager of mining and milling. Incos Board of Directors elected Wint as president of the Manitoba Division in 1974. In 1978 Wint was elected president of Incos Ontario Division in Sudbury with overall responsibility for mining and processing operations. He served as president until 1984. After retiring from Inco, they moved to Winnipeg where Wint became the president of the Mining Association of Manitoba. In 1992 they retired to Falcon Lake. They returned to Sudbury last month. Wint will be remembered as a loving, caring and compassionate husband, father, father-in-law and friend. He was an avid golfer, curler and sailor. Wint and his family were among the early pioneers of Thompson who contributed to the growth and success of the community and Inco. Upon his return to Sudbury as president of the Ontario Division, Wint was instrumental in establishing Incos presence and leadership in the community most notably Incos corporate and financial support for the creation of Science North. Wint served on the Board of Governors of Laurentian University from 1978 to 1984. He continued his ongoing association and support of Laurentian Universitys academic and research programs. Wint was a member of the Canadian Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, the Thompson Kinsmen Club and Queens University Alumni Association. Cremation at the Park Lake Crematorium. A family service will be held in Kenora at a later date. Donations to the Salvation Army, the Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
