SAMUEL B. TAUBER 1904 - 2002 Samuel Benjamin Tauber, aged 98, died on Tuesday, August 20, 2002 in Winnipeg at the Sharon Home - Simkin Centre, in the presence of his son and daughter-in-law. Born in Austria on February 10, 1904, Mr. Tauber, who was the youngest of six children, was educated at the University of Lemberg. His wife Gertrude (Gittel) died in 1961 and he is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Maurice and Catherine; three grandchildren, Paul and his wife Shawna, Michael and Agatha; and a great-grandchild Richard Lyon Tauber. Prior to the Second World War, he and his family lived in Winkler, MB. In 1940 they moved to Winnipeg where for many years he was associated with Warkov-Safeer, wholesalers of leather and shoe findings in the western provinces. In 1950 he founded S.B. Tauber & Co., subsequently, Tauber, Good & Assoc., wholesalers of footwear and related products. Throughout much of Taubers life in Winnipeg he contributed actively to various community functions. For many years he was a volunteer director of the Israelite Press, and chairman of the Jewish Public Library. He also gave talks that covered a variety of topics, on the radio and to many groups. He participated in the association of the ethnic press in Manitoba. He wrote numerous articles for publications in Canada, the U.S.A., Latin America and Israel. Tauber gained great satisfaction from sponsoring many families that survived the Holocaust and helping them to rebuild their lives in Canada. Characteristically, he formed enduring friendships with many individuals of diverse backgrounds within communities in Winnipeg and Manitoba. The family greatly appreciates the care and attention that he received during his stay at the Sharon Home, particularly from the second floor staff. Funeral services were held at the Shaarey Zedek Memorial Park on August 23. Memorial contributions may be made to the Sharon Home Endowment Fund at the Jewish Foundation of Manitoba, 400-123 Doncaster St., Winnipeg, MB R3N 2B2, or other charities.
