GEORGE HARPER Suddenly in the early morning hours of September 15, 2002, George Harper passed away at the age of 90. He leaves behind his wife of 62 years, Frances; daughter Eileen and husband Richard Hay; grand-children, Ellen Diane Bordass and Alfred George Bordass; great-grandchildren, Katlyn, Cassandra, Dillon and Ainsley all of Winnipeg; sister-in-law Phyllis Simcox of Newcastle-under-Lyme, England. Born in Hanford, Stoke-on-Trent, England on August 1, 1912, he was predeceased by his parents, Ada and Fredrick Harper; brothers Tom, Fred, Bert, Ted and Jim and two sisters in the flu epidemic of 1918. He served in the Royal Pioneer Corps from 1940 to 1946, and remained on the reserve call-up list until coming to Canada in 1957. Since that time he has had a good life, always taking pride in his work and making many friends along the way. He retired from the City of Winnipeg after more than 25 years at the Windsor Park Golf Course. He and Frances enjoyed many years of golfing together, their shared passion. George was an accomplished tinkerer and spent many hours in his basement workroom. He was also a member of the Fort Rouge Legion and for many years enjoyed playing billiards there. He liked going to Club Regent, and loved to complain about the poor payouts on the horse racing machine. Until his health began to fail, Wednesday nights was bowling night with Eileen and Richard. He enjoyed talking to people but his forte was that he was a good listener. The family wishes to thank the nursing staff at Concordia Hospital emergency for making his last hours comfortable. Their kindness to the family was very much appreciated. Also thanks to the first-responders and ambulance staff for being there so quickly. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, September 19 at 11:00 a.m. at Cropo Funeral Chapel, 1442 Main St. No flowers please. Make a donation to the charity of your choice in remembrance should you choose. CROPO FUNERAL CHAPEL 586-8044
