DORIS (DYCK) FRIESEN It is with sadness, yet in celebration, we announce the passing our mother and grandmother, into the Kingdom of our Lord. Born February 24, 1930, Doris passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2002 at Bethania Personal Care Home of Winnipeg. Left to cherish her memory is her daughter, Charlotte (Dave) of Dalmeny, SK; son, Ken (Kris) and grandchildren, Scarlett and Hudson of Dugald, MB. Doris was predeceased by her husband Henry. Doris is also survived by five sisters, Mary Froese of Saskatoon, Helen Giesbrecht (Hank) of Mayfair, SK, Margaret Wreggitt Hockette (Wayne) of Edmonton, AB, Agnes Grant of Winnipeg, Clair Darvill (Mike) of Winnipeg; and many dearly loved nieces and nephews. Doris was born in Northern Saskatchewan at Lawson and raised at Mullingar and Glenbush. She graduated from Rosthern College in 1948. Later she attended both the University of Manitoba and Winnipeg. She was married to Henry Friesen on August 10, 1951. In 1954 they moved to Winnipeg where their children were born. In 1960, Doris was baptized upon her confession of faith in Jesus Christ. Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church was an important part of her life. Doris was active in the church library and Sunday School. In 1971 she began a long career with C.N.I.B. as a volunteer transcriber/instructor of Braille. This culminated in working in Ethiopia for two years, under the sponsorship of the Christian Blind Mission International. Upon arriving back in Canada in 1988, Doris began work for Lutheran Braille Workers, of California, who transcribe the Scriptures into Braille, in many languages. Doris began transcribing the Old Testament from Amharic print to Amharic Braille in 1990, and completed it in 1996. It was her calling from God and He supplied the guidance and insights. In 1991, Doris was awarded the Canada Volunteer Award Certificate of Merit for her volunteer work with C.N.I.B. and community activities. Doris particularly enjoyed travelling abroad with her husband and in her final years, enjoyed visits from her grandchildren. Doris will also be remembered for her undying optimism to those around her. My life flows on in an endless song Above Earths lamentation I catch the sweet, though far off hymn That hails a new creation. No storm can shake my inmost calm, While to that Rock Im clinging. Since love is Lord of heaven and earth How can I keep from singing? Thanks to Rev. Edwin Epp and Rev. Ben Sawatzky for their loving care . We would also like to thank the tremendous staff of Bethania for all their loving care and compassion. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Bethania Personal Care Home. The funeral service will be held on Saturday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m. at Sargent Avenue Mennonite Church, 926 Garfield St. N. at Sargent. Viewing at the church prior to the service. Interment will take place at Springstein Cemetery. Arrangements are entrusted to Klassen Funeral Chapel, 338-0331.
