STANLEY STEVEN HODGE 1940-2002 On Friday, Sept-ember 20, 2002 at the Riverview Health Centre, Stan peacefully passed away. Stan was born on April 2, 1940 in Pointe du Bois, MB on the Winnipeg River. He possessed an enduring love of the Winnipeg River and the surrounding areas. The best of times were spent with family and friends on many fishing, camping and lately kayaking trips. Stan attended United College and University of Manitoba. He graduated Electrical Engineering in 1961 and completed his MSc in 1967. Awarded the Athlone Fellowship in 1968, he and Sharon travelled to Manchester, England where he completed his PhD. They returned home in 1971. Stan married Sharon Goddard in August 1967. Their 35-year marriage has been an adventure filled with love, happiness, laughter, family, friends and travel. Stans greatest joy was his family. He was a proud, loving, kind and gentle husband and father, who will be sorely missed. His memory lives on in us. Stans career included working for Atomic Energy of Canada, the Canadian Aerospace industry at Bristol Aerospace working with Black Brant Rockets in Winnipeg, Churchill and Barbados. Stan enjoyed learning and sharing his knowledge, which led to a career in teaching. He taught at Red River Community College, the University of Manitoba and from 1972 to 1976, at the University of the West Indies in Trinidad, West Indies. In 1976, he and the family returned to Winnipeg where he began working for Manitoba Hydro, remaining there until his retirement in 2000. Stan possessed a quick wit, a sense of fun and humour, and an ability to see every situation from an alternate point of view. These abilities as well as his love of life and his generous spirit endeared him to many. His adventurous spirit lead him to study the arts of Judo, Karate, Yoga and Tai Chi. He earned his private pilots licence in 1967, and also enjoyed the sports of scuba diving, hang gliding, canoeing and kayaking. Stan was predeceased by his father Dave in 1998 and his mother Mary in 2000. He is lovingly remembered by his wife Sharon, the love of his life for over 40 years; children, Laurie (Mike) and grandson Finlay (who Stan was especially happy to greet on July 8, 2002), Steven (Eugenia), and Kristen (Patrick) mother-in-law Ethel; sister Heather (Scotty) brother Bryant (Jackie) sister-in-law Patricia; brother-in-law Hugh (Annette) and his aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and their families. Stan will be sadly missed by his cousin Ralph (Doreen) and his lifelong friends, Waldie (Irmgard), Waris (Parvin) and Gordon (Bev). At his request, we include a heartfelt thanks and appreciation for the skill, expertise and kindness of Louise, Home Care Palliative nurse; his physicians, Dr. Ross Stimpson, Dr. Jeremy Lipschitz, Dr. James Johnston and nurses at CancerCare Manitoba; Sandi, Giselle and Allison. The family wishes to thank the staff of 3East Riverview Health Centre for their compassionate care. Cremation has taken place. A celebration of Stans life will occur on Tuesday, October 1 at 1:00 p.m. in Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St., with The Rev. Gordon Shields officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of Stan may be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3A 0C8. LEATHERDALE GARDINER 1501 Waverley Street 949-4860
