JESSIE ELIZABETH SIMMIE Jessie Elizabeth Mary Simmie passed away peacefully on September 15, 2002, at Golden Links Lodge where she had resided since 1998. Jessie, the daughter of James and Margaret (McCulloch) Simmie, was born in Clavering, ON, on December 7, 1902. The family moved to Manitoba in 1904, settling in the Morden area. After completing her schooling, Jessie became a teacher, working at Lac du Bonnet, Foxwarren and Shoal Lake, MB, for the next 12 years. She then decided to become a nurse, graduating as a R.N. from the Winnipeg General Hospital in 1942, in spite of having to overcome serious health problems. Following graduation, she did private duty nursing, then worked in the Anaesthetic Department, before being instrumental in the setting up of the first Recovery Room at the W.G.H. She retired as Head Nurse of this department in 1968. Jessie was a faithful member of Churchill Park (formerly Riverview) United Church, the U.C.W., the Retired Women Teachers Association and a Life Member of the Alumnae Association of the Winnipeg General Hospital and the Health Sciences Centre School of Nursing. She was a keen bridge player, a great sports enthusiast and an avid reader, with an active interest in world affairs. In addition, she created many wonderful needlework pictures which will remain as treasured heirlooms for her family. Jessie deeply valued her family. To her, peace, stability and love were everything. Her concern and caring about others always took precedence over thinking about herself. She was a person of great wisdom with a real sense of humour. She had the ability to always see the good in everyone. Jessie was predeceased by her parents; her brothers, James, Bert, Albert, Wilfrid, Allan and Archie; and two sisters, Mrs. Jean Kyle and Mrs. Bella Thorpe. She is survived by numerous nieces and nephews, who will greatly miss her. The family would like to extend heartfelt thanks to all the staff at Golden Links for their loving care to our Aunt during the past four years. A Service of Remembrance will be held at the Bardal Funeral Home, 843 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, on Saturday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m. Interment will take place at Hillside Cemetery, Portage La Prairie. If friends so desire, donations in Jessies memory may be made to Golden Links Lodge, 2280 St. Marys Rd., Winnipeg, R2M 4A5; The Canadian Diabetes Association (Manitoba I.B.), 1080 Portage Ave. BARDAL FUNERAL HOME 843 Sherbrook Street, 774-7474
