MARY ELIZABETH (BETTY) ROSS (nee JOHNSTON)
Born: Jan 30, 1924
Date of Passing: Sep 20, 2002
Offer Condolences or MemoryMARY ELIZABETH (BETTY) ROSS (nee JOHNSTON) January 30, 1924 - September 20, 2002 It is with deep and profound sorrow that we announce the sudden passing of our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend on Friday, September 20, 2002. Betty was born and raised in Winnipeg and spent her early years in the St. Charles and St. James area. She had been employed in a variety of positions during her lifetime, including Cara Operations Flight Kitchen, Perth/Whitehall Laundry, Sears Canada, the Winnipeg Free Press and the City of Winnipeg Parks and Recreation Department, where she retired from her position of Supervisor of the Arena Canteens in St. James. She was loved and respected by all those who worked with and for her. Mom was a bright spot to everyone who knew her. She was kind and generous, always putting the needs of others before her own. She enjoyed her times at the family cottage at Whytewold Beach, where she and her family spent many relaxing weekends together. She also loved to travel, and in the last two years was able to fulfill a lifelong dream to take a Caribbean Cruise and to tour the East Coast of Canada. She enjoyed her shopping trips to Grand Forks, and her trips to Shooting Star Casino with her friends from her Seniors groups. During the last several years she was an active member of the YM-YWCA Seniors Day Program, and she could always be found with her "Y" friends on Thursdays. But most of all, Mom was a wonderful mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and wife to her husband Les who predeceased her in 1998. She touched and influenced our lives in many different ways, and gave us support and encouragement when we most needed it. She loved us all unconditionally, with all of her heart and soul. In addition to her loving husband Les, she was predeceased by her parents, Marie and Edward Johnston; brother Herbert and sister-in-law Muriel Johnston; her sister Doris and brother-in-law Fred Fingler; and her sister-in-law Roberta Johnston. She leaves to mourn her passing her four children, Betty-May (Gary Black), Barry (Kelli), Fay-Heather (Larry Stafford) and Jeffrey, as well as her four grandchildren, Denny, Jennifer, Sam and Ben. Also left to mourn are her brother George Johnston; brother Bill and sister-in-law Greta Johnston; sister Margaret and brother-in-law Norman Pattern; Penny and Don Ross; and several other nieces and nephews. She will also be sadly missed by her special friend "Susie" Simister, as well as all of the other friends she made throughout her lifetime. In our hearts you will always stay. We love you Prayer service will be held on Tuesday, September 24 at 7:00 p.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. A memorial service to celebrate Bettys life will be held on Wednesday, September 25 at 3:00 p.m. also at Chapel Lawn. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in her memory to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Winnipeg, MB, R3L 0K6 or Breast Cancer Center of Hope, 691 Wolseley Ave., Winnipeg, MB.
