SENATEUR RONALD J. DUHAMEL Paisiblement, le 30 septembre 2002, a sa residence a Winnipeg, est decede Ronald J. Duhamel entoure de sa famille. Il laisse dans le deuil son epouse Carolyn; ses trois filles, Kathie (Tim Paziuk) et petits-enfants, Michael et Colin de High River, AB, Natalie (Jeremy Bigold) de Winnipeg, Karine de Sachville, NB; ses soeurs, Therese (Leopold) Levesque, Anita Renton, Rita (Bill) Wilde; ses freres, Norman (Marie), Denis (Carol) son beau-pere William Graham; ses beaux-freres et belles-soeurs, Sharon (Dwight Donaghue), Barry et Susan Graham, Debbie et Dana Nieminen; ainsi que plusieurs nieces, neveux et cousin(e)s. Le senateur Duhamel est ne a Saint-Boniface et a grandit dans une famille de douze enfants qui a pris souche a lexterieur de Pinewood en Ontario. Apres avoir complete ses etudes secondaires a lecole de Rainy River, il donne libre cours a son desir toujours grandissant dapprendre. Il recoit en 1968, son Baccalaureat es arts de lUniversite de Lakehead et par la suite complete une maitrise et un doctorat en gestion et administration de lUniversite de Toronto. Ronald a eu une tres longue carriere dans le domaine de leducation, comme enseignant, directeur decole, aviseur, directeur en education et directeur regional en education pour la province de lOntario. En 1979, Ronald a ete nomme sous-ministre adjoint responsable de leducation en francais au Manitoba et plus tard promus au poste de sous-ministre en education pour la province. De 1986 a 1988, il a ete professeur en enseignement de ladministration scolaire a lUniversite du Manitoba. Il fut elu au parlement pour la premiere fois en novembre 1988. En 1980, il a ete lun de deux Canadiens a recevoir le prix "Young Leadership of America Award", qui reconnait le potentiel dun leadership exceptionnel chez les jeunes. En 1986, il est reconnu a titre de "Fellow of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education", pour sa contribution exceptionnelle envers leducation au Canada. En 1987, il a recu la medaille du Gouverneur general, attribue pour lexcellence en administration publique. Et en 2000, il est nomme Grand Chevalier de lOrdre de la Pleiade internationale. Durant ses treize annees comme depute de Saint-Boniface, Ronald Duhamel a represente avec vigilance, les interets des membres de sa circonscription. Il a bien servi sa province et son pays dans lexercice de ses fonctions en tant que ministre des Anciens combattants, ministre en chef du Manitoba, secretaire dEtat a la Diversification de leconomie de lOuest, aux Sciences, a la Recherche au Developpement et a la Francophonie, pour ensuite recevoir du Premier ministre une nomination au Senat du Canada. Engage et passionne, Ronald Duhamel a toujours encourage de facon altruiste les Canadiens et les Canadiennes, et plus precisement les jeunes, a profiter pleinement des perspectives davenir. Convaincu de la valeur de la contribution de tous et chacun, il faisait ressortir le meilleur de ceux et celles qui avaient le privilege de travailler avec lui. Il faisait avancer la cause des moins nantis, en toute justice et honnetete. Il savait ecouter. Homme de qualite, il appreciait les gens qui lentouraient, ainsi que toute opportunite dapprendre de choses nouvelles. Ronald etait indulgent, juste, et tres genereux et avait un esprit large. Sa grande loyaute envers sa famille et ses ami(e)s na jamais ete mise en doute. De tous les titres qui lui ont ete conferes, que ce soit ministre, secretaire dEtat, ou senateur, le plus approprie sera toujours celui de lhonorable Ronald J. Duhamel. La famille Duhamel aimerait remercier Dr Foerster et tous les employe(e)s de la clinique du cancer a lHopital general Saint-Boniface. Un merci tres sincere a Myrna Brownlee, infirmiere responsable des soins a domicile, ainsi que le personnel des soins palliatifs. Un merci du fond du coeur a Ted Creagh, Al Crippen et Don Lake qui ont donne genereusement de leur temps a Ronald lorsquil avait besoin de leur appui et de leur presence. De plus, Carolyn, Kathie, Natalie et Karine remercient la famille, les ami(e)s, et les collegues qui les ont soutenues lorsquelles et Ronald en avait tellement besoin. Elles se sont senties privilegiees. Les prieres auront lieu le vendredi 4 octobre a 19 h a leglise de la Paroisse des Saints-Martyrs-Canadiens, au 289, rue Dussault. La celebration des funerailles aura lieu le samedi 5 octobre, en la Cathedrale de Saint-Boniface, situee au 200, avenue de la Cathedrale, a compter de 14 h 00. La ceremonie sera presidee par Monseigneur Noel Delaquis et les concelebrants seront Monsieur labbe Paul Campeau et Monsieur labbe Jean-Louis Rocan. En reconnaissance de la grande contribution apportee par le senateur et de sa vie dengagement, et avec laccord de la famille du senateur Duhamel, lHopital general Saint-Boniface a mis sur pied un Fonds de recherche dedie a sa memoire. Le Fonds dinnovation Ronald J. Duhamel reconnaitra son engagement et ses contributions envers la recherche et leducation en appuyant des projets novateurs pour la recherche et lhopital. SENATOR RONALD J. DUHAMEL Peacefully, on September 30th, 2002, at his residence in Winnipeg surrounded by his family, Ron J. Duhamel passed away. To mourn his passing, Ron leaves his wife Carolyn; three daughters, Kathie (Tim Paziuk) and grandchildren, Micheal and Colin of High River, AB, Natalie (Jeremy Bigold) of Winnipeg, Karine of Sackville, NB; sisters, Therese (Leopold) Levesque, Anita Renton, and Rita (Bill) Wilde; brothers, Norman (Marie) and Denis (Carol) father-in-law William Graham; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Sharon (Dwight Donaghue), Barry and Susan Graham, Debbie and Dana Nieminen; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Born in historic St. Boniface, Senator Duhamel spent most of his childhood growing up with his brothers and sisters just outside of Pinewood, ON and completed his high school education in Rainy River, ON. In 1968 he graduated from Lakehead University with a Bachelor of Arts and later completed his masters and doctoral degrees in management and administration at the University of Toronto. Ron had a lengthy career in education as a teacher, principal, a consultant, director of education and regional director of education with the Province of Ontario. In 1979 Ron was named Assistant Deputy Minister for French language education in Manitoba and later promoted to the position of Deputy Minister of Education for the province. From 1986 to 1988 he was a professor of Educational Administration at the University of Manitoba and elected to parliament for the first time in November 1988. In 1980, Ron was one of two Canadians who received the Young Leadership of America Award, which recognizes outstanding leadership potential in young men and women. In 1986, he was made a Fellow of the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education for his significant contributions to education in Canada. In 1987, he was awarded the Lieutenant-Governors Medal for Excellence in Public Administration. And in 2000, he was made a Grand Chevalier of the international lOrdre de la Pleiade. In his 13 years as Member of Parliament for St. Boniface, Ron Duhamel vigilantly repre-sented the interests of his constituents in the House of Commons. He also served his province and his country in various capacities including Minister of Veterans Affairs, senior minister for Manitoba, and Secretary of State for Western Economic Diversification, Science, Research and Development, and La Francophonie. The Prime Minister honoured him further with an appointment to the Senate of Canada earlier this year. Dedicated and passionate, Ron was selfless in promoting opportunities for all Canadians, especially youth. Believing that everyone had something valuable to contribute, he brought out the best in people who had the good fortune to work with him. He was a champion of the less fortunate, holding justice and fairness in high regard. He was a master of the art of listening. Above all, he enjoyed the people around him and the opportunity to learn something new every day. Ron was tolerant, broad-minded, just and extraordinarily generous. He was fiercely loyal to his family and friends. Of all his titles - Minister, Secretary of State and Senator - he truly reflected the designation of the Honourable Ron J. Duhamel. The Duhamel family would like to thank Dr. Foerster and all the staff at the Cancer Clinic of the St. Boniface General Hospital. A warm thank you is also extended to Myrna Brownlee, visiting home care nurse and the staff of the Palliative Care Unit of the St. Boniface Hospital. A heartfelt tribute goes to Ted Creagh, Al Crippen and Don Lake who generously gave of their time to care for Ron when he needed companionship and assistance. Finally, Carolyn, Kathie, Natalie and Karine want to thank all family, friends and colleagues who have provided support to them and to Ron when it was needed most. They feel truly blessed. Prayer services will be held Friday evening, October 4 at 7:00 p.m. at St. Martyrs Parish located at 289 Dussault St. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, October 5, 2:00 p.m. at the St. Boniface Cathedral located at 200 Cathedral Ave. The funeral service will be presided by Msgr. Noel Delaquis and concelebrants will be Fr. Paul Campeau and Fr. Jean-Louis Rocan. To honour Rons life and contributions, and with the agreement of Senator Duhamels family, the St. Boniface Hospital and Research Foundation has established an endowment fund in his memory. The Fonds dinnovation Ronald Duhamel Innovation Fund will honour his dedication to research and education by supporting research and hospital projects that show leadership and innovation.
