BRENT DOHERTY January 10, 1952 - September 22, 2002 Brent Doherty passed away peacefully at his home on Sept-ember 22, 2002, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Brent was born January 10, 1952 in Brandon, one of five children born to Ken and Eileen Doherty. Brent was a happy and loving child with a good sense of humour and was always smiling, a trait he carried throughout his life. Brent loved animals. He always had his pet dog with him and "Bonnie", his favourite pony. He attended school at Oak Lake and later at Virden Collegiate. Brent loved sports and excelled at everything he tried. Hockey was his favourite sport; he played goalie. Brent loved to get out with the guys and play hockey. He helped to organize a trip to Europe with his hockey team in January of 1989. This was a memorable trip for Brent and his teammates. Brent also enjoyed baseball; he played slo-pitch along with his wife Joan. Brent also enjoyed coaching. He coached minor hockey and loved coaching his daughters baseball teams. Brent started driving a truck at an early age hauling hay for his dad. He worked for many companies and travelled almost every highway in Western Canada and United States. He loved to see new country and enjoyed going south to warmer weather in the winter. He also worked as a crane operator at Simplot, on a hydro-vac on the pipeline and custom combined in the United States. Wherever he worked he always made numerous friends and enjoyed telling and listening to stories. Brent married Joan Johnston on May 24, 1975, and they lived for a short time in Regina; but he really loved his hometown of Oak Lake and they moved back home. Brent and Joan had two children, Teresa and Tracy. Brent loved children especially babies. He cherished his children and took great pride in all their accomplishments. Brent was predeceased by his grandparents, Russell and Arlie Hogg, Nora and Thomas Doherty and his dear nephew, Gerald Van Loo. Brent is survived by his wife Joan; daughters, Teresa and Tracy; his mother Eileen and father Ken; his brothers, Ken (Marlene) and Gerry; and sisters, Brenda (Elden) Boon and Dale (Wilf) Van Loo; his father-in-law Barry (Erva) Johnston; brothers-in-law, John (Barb) and Jerry (Debbie) and sisters-in-law, Janice (Gord) Huminuk and Judy (Wallace) McLean. There are also numerous nieces and nephews to cherish his memory as well as many friends. Brent will be lovingly remembered and forever missed. Dont think of me as gone away my journeys just begun, life holds so many facets - this earth is only one. And think of him as living in the hearts of those he touched... for nothing loved is ever lost... and he was loved so much. A funeral service in honour of Brents memory was held at Oak Lake United Church on September 25. Funeral arrangements were made by Carscaddens Funeral Home in Virden. If people wish to make a donation in Brents memory it can be made to: Oak Lake Ambulance Services, Oak Lake Minor Hockey or a charity of your choice.
