EDOUARD ROLAND LAFORTUNE Le 4 octobre 2002, entoure de sa famille et de ses amis, est decede au Centre hospitalier Tache Edouard R. Lafortune. Lont precede aupres du Pere eternel, ses parents Georges A. et Eugenie Lafortune, ses freres aines Joseph, Marcien et Hubert, et ses soeurs Berthe, Cecile et Therese. Ed laisse dans le deuil ses soeurs Irene Clifford, Jeannette Cormier, Marguerite (George) Petit, Yvonne Brodie, Ida (Francis) Applemans, Georgette (George) Forbes, Anita Balzer, sa belle soeur Fernande (Lafortune) Masse, et de nombreux neveux et nieces. Edouard est ne a Woodridge le 13 fevrier 1922. Il alla a lecole secondaire a La Broquerie. Durant toutes ces annees, il fut un enfant de coeur devoue a la paroisse Saint-Joachim. Suivant lexemple de son pere, Ed devint administrateur-adjoint du district de Piney et fut nomme plus tard administrateur permanent du district dAlexander (region de St-Georges, Pinefalls, Powerview) et du district de la Montagne (region de Swan River). Une fois a la retraite, Ed aimait beaucoup rendre visite a ses amis de ces endroits-la. A Ottawa, il travailla pour le ministere federal des Affaires du Nord et des Ressources naturelles. Durant cette periode, il senrola dans la Reserve des Cameron Highlanders, completant la formation requise et se qualifiant pour les operations de sauvetage de larmee canadienne (milice). Il occupa differents postes de responsabilite jusqua sa retraite en 1977. Durant sa vie, le devouement a son travail et au service de sa communaute apporterent a Ed le respect de ses camarades. Guitariste autodidacte, cest souvent quil se joignait a lorchestre local pour divertir ses amis. Edouard aimait tellement la musique que ses talents lamenerent plus tard a jouer de laccordeon. La famille desire remercier les docteurs Frank Albi et Kevin Coates ainsi que le personnel de laile 5ABC du Centre Tache. Leur gentillesse et leur compassion furent exceptionnelles et tres appreciees lors de ces moments difficiles. Les prieres auront lieu lundi 7 octobre 2002 a 19h30 au Salon mortuaire Desjardins, 357, rue Des Meurons. Pour celebrer sa vie, la messe de la resurrection presidee par M. lAbbe Marcel Chaput, aura lieu mardi 8 octobre 2002 a 10h30 en leglise du Precieux-Sang, 200, rue Kenny. Lenterrement aura lieu plus tard dans lapres-midi dans la tombe familiale du cimetiere de la paroisse de Woodridge. Lafortune, aged 80 years, passed away at the Tache Centre with his family by his side. Ed was predeceased by his parents Georges A. and Eugenie Lafortune; older brothers, Joseph, Marcien and Hubert; and sisters, Berthe, Cecile and Therese. He is survived by sisters, Irene Clifford, Jeanette Cormier, Marguerite (George) Petit, Yvonne Brodie, Ida (Francis) Applemans, Georgette (George) Forbes, Anita Balzer, sister-in-law Fernande (Lafortune) Masse and his many nieces and nephews. Edouard was born in Woodridge on February 13, 1922 and received his education in La Broquerie completing high school. During all these years, he served faithfully as altar boy at St. Joachims Parish of La Broquerie. Following in his fathers profession he became Assistant Administrator for the Local Government of Piney and later appointed the Resident Administrator for the Local Government District of Alexander (St. Georges, Pinefalls, Powerview area) and the District of Mountain (Swan River area). After his retirement, he enjoyed visiting old friends in those areas. In Ottawa, he worked in the Federal Department of Northern Affairs and National Resources. While there he joined the Cameron Highlanders Reserve, completing the required training and qualifying in rescue operations for the Canadian Army (militia). Edouard returned to his family in Manitoba. He held several responsible positions until his retirement in 1977. Throughout his life, his dedication to his work and service in the community earned him the respect of his fellow men. A self-taught guitar player, he often joined local bands to entertain friends in the area. Edouard loved music and his talent would later extend to the accordion. The family would like to thank Dr. Frank Albi and Dr. Kevin Coates and all the staff of 5ABC at Tache Centre. Their kindness and compassion were exceptional and very much appreciated in his time of need. Prayer services will be held on Monday evening, October 7 at 7:30 p.m. at Desjardins Funeral Chapel, 357 Des Meurons St. In celebration of his life, Mass of the Resurrection will be at 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, October 8 at the Precieux-Sang Roman Catholic Church, 200 Kenny St. in St. Boniface with Rev. Fr. Marcel Chaput officiating. Interment will follow later in the afternoon at the family plot in Woodridge Parish Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations in Edouards memory may be made to the Tache Centre, 185 Despins St., Winnipeg, MB, R2H 2B3.
