Joan was born in Ithaca, NY, on December 30, 1933 and lived in Newfield with her parents, John Henry and Alice May Heslop (Evans). She attended Newfield High School and Ithaca College and graduated with a B.S. in Physical Education. Upon graduating from college she worked as a teacher in North Syracuse, NY. In November 1957 while job hunting in Washington, DC she met Lorne at the U-Line Ice Skating Arena. She left to work in Murnau, Germany for the U.S. Army Special Services and corresponded with Lorne throughout 1958-59. She returned to the U.S. and married Lorne in Winnipeg in August 1959. She enjoyed travelling, camping, and spent sabbatical years with her husband and family in Malaga, Spain, Tucson, AZ. and Rome, Italy. She was completely devoted to her husband, her children and grandchildren. Joan loved crafts, knitting, sewing, and artwork. She also loved languages and engendered a deep desire in her children to expose themselves to different languages and cultures. More recently she had a great interest in genealogy and carried on a large correspondence with family and friends through e-mail. She traced her family back through the U.S. Civil War, U.S. Revolutionary War, back to 14th Century England. She will be greatly missed by her husband, Lorne, with whom she was married for 43 years, and many friends in both Winnipeg and New York State. The family would like to thank Dr. David R. Dougherty of the Roswell Cancer Institute of Buffalo, NY, and cousins, Drs. Jennifer and Robert Erickson and their children, Robert, David, Molly, and Betsy as well as Joans son Fr.
