MELVIN DOUGLAS CALDER 1935 - 2002 With great sorrow, we announce the passing of Melvin (Mel) Calder, on Tuesday, October 22, 2002. Mel is survived by Joyce, his loving and devoted wife of 45 years; his children, Doug (Jill), Debbie (Mike) Giardino, and Sandy (Ron) Fay; and his grandchildren, Jim, Ken, David, Nikki, Katie, Amanda, Sarah and Jessica. He will also be greatly missed by his sister Gwen Martin, his brother-in-law Bruce Wood and their families. Mel was preceded by his parents, John (1952), Winnifred (2001) and his sister Muriel Wood (1997). Mel was born in Emerson. He spent his early years in Winnipeg and Red Lake, ON before settling in Winnipeg and starting his family. Mel worked his entire career of 36 years with the CNR. He worked in various positions in Winnipeg, Dauphin and Montreal. He retired in 1988 as regional manager of automotive services. During his retirement, he fulfilled his passion for fishing in the remote north country of Manitoba by building a cabin on the north side of Wekusko Lake. He would prefab sections during the winter months and then single handedly haul the pieces across the lake in his homemade boat and then reassemble them into his wilderness retreat. Mel, you were a loving husband, a supportive father, an adoring grandfather, a caring brother and a thoughtful friend. We are going to miss your kind and gentle spirit. You will be laid to rest, but not forgotten. Memorial services will be held at Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 1501 Waverley St. on Saturday, October 26 at 1:00 p.m. Family internment will be held in Emerson at a later date. In lieu of flowers, a donation in his name can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 19 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 2B7 LEATHERDALE GARDINER 1501 Waverley Street 949-4860
