DR. W. MAXWELL HAWKINS Dr. William Maxwell Hawkins, formerly of Cortland, NY, passed away peacefully October 13, 2002, at home in Palm Coast, FL, with his family by his side. He was 76 years old. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Muriel G. Hawkins, also of Palm Coast; two daughters, Marlene G. Hawkins of Clinton, NY, Julie E. Hawkins of Miami, FL; nieces, Patricia Gagnon and Donna Hewko of Winnipeg; and nephew Eugene Hewko of Tyndall, MB. Dr. Hawkins, a native of the greater Winnipeg area, Canada, obtained his bachelors degree in geology from Queens University in Kingston, ON, Canada, and earned a masters degree and a Ph.D. in geology and geochemistry from McGill University in Montreal in 1960. Dr. Hawkins was an experienced field geologist and a member of the geology faculty at Lawrence University in Appleton, WI, before coming to the State University College at Cortland in 1963. He was one of the founders and the first chairman of the SUNY - Cortland Department of Geology. His administrative leadership guided the development, advancement and diversification of earth science and geology curricula at Cortland College. Dr. Hawkins served the department, the college and its students for 28 years until his retirement in 1991. Memorial services will be held at the SUNY - Cortland Interfaith Center, 7 Calvert Street, on November 1 at 3:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the W. Maxwell Hawkins Award for Outstanding Academic Achievement through the Cortland College Foundation, SUNY Cortland, P.O. Box 2000, Cortland, NY, 13045, (607) 753-5572; to the First Presbyterian Church of Cortland, or to the charitable organization of your choice.
