He will be lovingly remembered by his wife Ana; son John, daughter-in-law Muriel, and grandchildren, Dillon and Kaitlin. He was predeceased by his father and mother, Jose and Augusta Nunes; brother Joaquim Nunes; and sister Maria Ribeiro Rodrigues of Portugal. Joao was born in Almofala, Portugal, March 13, 1920. He served in the Portuguese Army from 1939 - 1942. Upon leaving the army he a worked as a conductor on the Lisbon streetcar system, and in mens clothing sales. He married Ana Maria Martins Cardoso on September 18, 1954. Joao chose to seek out a better life in Canada and embarked on his journey in 1956. He lived in various cities between Ontario and British Columbia while working on large construction projects as a carpenter, settling in Toronto for two years, where their only son was born, later making Winnipeg their permanent home. Joao was very involved in the Portuguese community and became a founding member of the Portuguese Association of Manitoba. He helped numerous Portuguese immigrants find jobs and homes during their difficult transition to living in Canada. He later went on to establish the first Portuguese bakery in Winnipeg and later the Goodwill Construction Company which he worked at until his retirement. He thoroughly enjoyed celebrations of numerous types, and hunting and fishing with his friends. Joao was never at a loss for projects and was known to have three or four going at the same time, with his trusty dog at his side. In his retirement gardening and his grandchildren were his greatest joys. Rest in eternal peace Dad, you will always be remembered and will be sorely missed by all that knew you. The family would like to express their sincere gratitude to the staff of Kildonan Personal Care Centre, and the Deer Lodge Centre for their care and compassion.
