LILY HOBBS We announce the peaceful passing on Wednesday, October 30, 2002, of Lily Hobbs, aged 97 years, at the Fort Garry Care Centre. She will be lovingly remembered by her nieces and nephews, Frank Thompson, Paul Thompson (Julie), Mari (Bob Klassen), Gordon Hobbs (Verna), James Hobbs, Patricia (Charles Alvarez), Karen (Ward Howe), and their families, and her great-niece and nephew Edna Tustin and John Barrand and their families. Lilys mother and father, her sister Annie, her brother Frank and her niece Frances Loppnau, predeceased her. Lily was born in Winnipeg on January 1, 1905, and during her 97 years, Winnipeg served as her home base for her countless trips to all corners of the world. Her travels provided her with endless subject matter to pursue her love for art. With her pen or pencil, she recorded interesting landscapes, buildings and people wherever she roamed. In 1952 she began her long membership with the Winnipeg Sketch Club and served as secretary for 17 years. It was Lily who did the long laborious research work for the history of the Sketch Club that was published in 1970. It was for her long years of service that she was honoured by being made a Life Member. Lily was a tireless worker volunteering her service in many areas. She was a member of the Winnipeg Business and Professional Womans Club from 1938, a member for over 50 years of the Order of Eastern Star and a member for many years of the Manitoba Naturalists Society, Manitoba Museum, and the Manitoba Historical Society. She was also a member of Westminster United Church from 1952. Lily retired in 1964 after a career of 40 years with the federal department of agricultures poultry division. Upon retirement, she embarked upon her most ambitious trip, a 16 month journey, mainly by sea, visiting Britain, New Zealand, Australia, Japan, Fiji, Hawaii, Hong Kong, Saigon, Singapore, Colombo, Karachi, Bombay, Djibouti, Cairo, France and Spain. Lily will be remembered by her nieces and nephews as a loving kind aunt, who travelled the world to visit them and their families, regardless of where they were located at the time. Cremation has taken place and a service of remembrance will take place on Thursday, November 7 at 3:00 p.m. in the Leatherdale Gardiner Funeral Chapel, 232 Kennedy St., with Rev. Rose Ferries officiating. Special thanks to all the staff at the Fort Garry Care Centre, her home for the past four years. LEATHERDALE GARDINER 232 Kennedy Street 949-4878
