ANNE SZKLARUK (nee KOHUT) October 2, 1927 - November 2, 2002 It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved mother and grandmother with her family by her side, on November 2, 2002, at the age of 75. Left to cherish her memory are daughters, Shirley (John) Guest of Regina, SK, Karen (Ron) Kisil of Winnipeg, MB; son Larry (Trina) Szklaruk of St. Martin, MB; and her precious grandchildren, Tracy, Cameron, Kristen, Ashley, Devin and Garett. She is also survived by one sister Mary Willobob of Thunder Bay, ON; brother-in-law Alex (Mary Helen) Szklaruk of St. Martin, MB; sisters-in-law, Olga Szklaruk of St. Martin, and Mary Strachan of Fullerton, CA; along with numerous nieces, nephews and many dear friends. Also left behind is her faithful companion and cherished pet Barney. She was predeceased by her husband Nestor in 1989; parents, William and Anna Kohut; and brother William Horbul of St. Paul, AB. Mom was born on October 2, 1927 in the Ukraine. She came to Canada in 1935 and was raised in Ituna, SK. Later, she moved to Manitoba where she met and married Nestor in 1952. She was employed as a cook at C.F.B. Gypsumville, MB, Johnnys Esso in St. Martin, and the Gypsumville Hotel. Mom was a devoted mother and grandmother. She enjoyed time with her children and spent countless hours with her grandchildren of whom she was so proud and cherished deeply. Above all, she loved family gatherings when all of her loved ones would come together. Mom was a kind, warm and giving person with a generous heart, gentle personality and warm smile. She had great enthusiasm for life, always helping others and giving freely of herself. She loved playing bingo, enjoyed casino trips with her senior group, vacations with her family and took up the game of golf at age 65. Mom was the secretary of the Northern Interlake Seniors Club and devoted countless hours to organizing bus trips, social gatherings and monthly meetings. She sat on the Board of Directors of the St. Martin Community Club and willingly volunteered her time to numerous community events such as preparing the wonderful food for Malanka (Ukrainian New Years) and she was always ready to help out anywhere she was needed. Mom also served as secretary/treasurer of the Ukrainian Greek Orthodox Church of St. Martin for many years. Mom was proud of her Ukrainian heritage and enjoyed teaching and passing down the time honoured traditions of her ethnic dishes and the fine art of Ukrainian Easter Egg decorating. She also enjoyed quilting, knitting, crocheting, tending to her garden and flowers and spending time with her many friends. According to Moms wishes, cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 9, at the St. Martin Community Hall, with Rev. Canon J. Ronald McCullough officiating. Interment to follow in the St. Michaels Churchyard Cemetery. Heartfelt thanks to Dr. Berrow and the devoted staff of the Lakeshore General Hospital. Your care given to Mom and our family during this difficult time will never be forgotten. Special thanks to Olga Shabaga, Jeanette Ewasiuk, Emily Madsen, Linda and Johnny Szklaruk and Olga and John Kostelnyk for their kindness and support during this difficult time. Mom was very appreciative of the show of love and support given by family and friends during her illness. She was so blessed and fortunate to have such wonderful people in her life. We, her family, feel most blessed because we called her Mother. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to CancerCare Manitoba, 675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3E 0V9.
