Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryLESLIE HAROLD ILES It is with great sadness that we announce the peaceful passing of Leslie Harold Iles on November 5, 2002, at Grace General Hospital. Les was born in Molesey, Surrey, England on August 18, 1919. In 1938, he began his lifelong career in law enforcement joining the London Metropolitan Police Force serving in the east end of London. In February 1942, Les enlisted in the Royal Air Force and received his training in Canada under the Commonwealth Air Training Command where he was stationed in Manitoba. He served in the India Burma Theatre of operations and was discharged with the rank of squadron leader. Upon returning to Canada he joined the Winnipeg Police Department in May 1947. In May 1948 he married Jacqueline (Jackie) Douglas and together they raised their family. Les spent his whole career with the Winnipeg Police Force and rose to the rank of Superintendent of Criminal Investigation. Prior to retirement he was appointed executive assistant to the Chief Constable. Les also spent nine years on the Canadian Police Standards Advisor Committee. In November 1997 Les was also awarded the City of Winnipeg Community Service Awards by Mayor Stephen Juba. Les was a very active member of the Masonic Order. He was initiated into Freemasonry in Meridian Lodge No. 140 on September 17, 1959, becoming master of the lodge in 1967. He was elected grand master of the Grand Lodge of Manitoba in 1983 to 1984. He was an honorary life member of Corinthian Lodge No. 178, Cornerstone Lodge No. 179 and Seven Stars Lodge No. 180. He was also an honorary past grand master of the Grand Lodges of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Minnesota and North Dakota. Les was the worshipful master and coordinator of the Police Degree Team travelling to many lodges throughout the jurisdiction to confer the Entered Apprentice Degree. Les was also a member of Scottish Rite Freemasonry (32 degree), the Royal Order of Scotland and the White Shrine of Jerusalem. Les enjoyed curling at the Fort Rouge Curling Club and was past president of the Seniors Recreational Club serving as cribbage chairman for 16 years. The family spent many enjoyable summers at the family cottage at Brereton Lake. He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Jackie; his three children, David (Susan), Diane (Doug) and Donna. He was an adoring grandfather to Dawn and David. The family wishes to express their sincere thanks to Dr. Oscar Domke and to the Palliative Care nursing staff at the Grace General Hospital for their kindness and support at this difficult time. Cremation has taken place and a Masonic memorial service will be held Friday, November 8 at 11:00 a.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapel, 669 Broadway Ave. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Grace Hospital Building Fund, in care of Grace General Hospital, 300 Booth Dr., Winnipeg, MB R3J 3M7 or Canadian Cancer Society, Manitoba Division, 193 Sherbrook St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 9Z9.
