Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDR. HUGH MURRAY ROSS MD, FRCP (C), FCAP The Family of Hugh Murray Ross sadly announces his passing on November 2, 2002, at Victoria General Hospital, one week after celebrating his 85th Birthday. Hugh was born October 25, 1917 in Toronto and spent his early years in Guelph, ON. He graduated Toronto Medical School in 1942 and was immediately sent overseas with Regiment de Trois Rivieres. Captain Ross served in North Africa, Italy, France and Belgium. He returned to Canada in 1945 and married Elizabeth (Betty) Grier in 1946. Betty predeceased Hugh in 1968 and in 1974 he married his beloved "Jo" (Johan) with whom he recently celebrated their 30th anniversary in June. Hugh is lovingly remembered by his wife Johan and children Hugh (Wendy), John (Virginia), Suzanne, Allison, and Graeme (Karen) as well as his step-children, Leslie (Jimmy) McNulty, Susan (Rene) Aprile, Nancy (Everett) Tremeer and Greg Metcalfe. Between them, Hugh and Jo have 22 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. One son, Fraser Murray, predeceased Hugh in 2001 and will be interred with him. Hugh and Jo enjoyed many trips together, especially to London, England. He was interested in many subjects as well as medicine and always strived to increase his knowledge. He loved to read and enjoyed classical music. He and Jo attended the Manitoba Theatre Centre and the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. In 1959, Hugh built a cottage at Fox Lake, ON and many happy times with family and friends were spent there. He had many dear friends at Fox Lake and passed on his love of the lake to his family. Soon after being certified in Pathology, Dr. Ross moved to Winnipeg in 1954 to work at the Winnipeg General Hospital. In 1967, he was appointed Director of Laboratories at Victoria General Hospital and moved to the new hospital in 1972. In 1977 through 1979 he was also President of the Medical Staff and retired from the hospital in 1982. It is fitting that he passed away at the hospital he loved so much. As a family we would like to extend our deepest gratitude to the medical staff at the VGH, especially the 4th floor staff. Hughs care extended well beyond medical - he was treated with respect, patience and genuine love. We will never forget their kindness. His wishes were to be cremated and he will be laid to rest in a private family service on Friday. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be held on Saturday, November 9 at 5:30 p.m. at Thomson Funeral Chapel on 669 Broadway. Flowers are respectfully declined and instead a donation to The Victoria General Hospital Foundation, 2340 Pembina Hwy. R3T 9Z9, would be a fitting tribute to Hughs memory.
