ISABEL (SUTHERLAND) McDOUGALL Peacefully, on November 6, 2002, at Tuxedo Villa, at 100 years. Isabel was the daughter of Alex and Vina (Paine) Sutherland, sister of Kathleen, and wife of her beloved husband Ken, all of whom have gone before. She will be dearly missed by her son Barry of Ottawa; grandchildren, Scott (and Karen Kidder) of Tortola, British Virgin Islands, Elizabeth (and Ahmet Tural) of Seattle, WA and Cynthia (and Phil Macoun) of Bogor, Indonesia; and her grandchildren Tucker, Emmett, Taylan and Anday. She will also be missed by her stepsister Lena (Mickey) Kindret and her family of New Westminster, BC. Born in Dauphin, Isabel grew up in Ochre River, MB and attended Provincial Normal School to train as a teacher. She thrived on the challenges of the pioneer one-room country school. While teaching at Gordon School, near Neepawa, she met Ken when they organized a community dance band. They were married in 1930 and operated Mentmore General Store and Post Office during the difficult Depression years, with Ken managing the local grain elevator as well. Characteristically, they put themselves at considerable financial risk to support their struggling farm neighbours, but as Isabel was fond of saying "our neighbours responded by paying every cent of their accounts". In the early 1940s, Isabel and Ken moved to Neepawa and, a few years later, to Winnipeg as Ken was given increasing responsibilities with Manitoba Pool Elevators. They retired in Winnipeg, wintering in the southern U.S., eventually making St. Petersburg, FL their winter home. Isabel was widowed in 1973. Everywhere Isabel lived and traveled, she developed strong and lasting friendships as a result of her warmth, kindness, rich sense of humour, courage, values, sincerity, love of good conversation and enjoyment of life and people. She had a wide range of interests including gardening, travel, curling, lawn bowling, literature, playing the piano, her church, the Blue Bombers, and especially her grandchildren, of whom she was very proud. "Dougall" was much loved and a great inspiration to them. She especially took great joy and pride in her loving son Barry. At her 100th birthday party on August 24 of this year, members of her family celebrated her long life, achievements and wonderful qualities. Sadly, that event coincided with the onset of medical problems, and despite her determination and strong constitution, complications eventually took their toll. During those difficult days, she was comforted by the care and company of her loved ones, and ultimately passed away peacefully. Special thanks are extended by the family to the staff of Tuxedo Villa, especially the Station One team, for the loving care and support to Isabel over the past five years. In keeping with her wishes, Isabel will be cremated and will join Ken at Waverley Memorial Gardens. A private family graveside service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to a charity of your choice. LEATHERDALE GARDINER 1501 Waverley Street 949-4860
