SIGURDUR ALBERT HELGASON Sig passed away on Thursday, November 7, 2002, at the age of 84 years, at the Victoria General Hospital. He will be sadly missed and fondly remembered by his family and friends. Sig is survived by his sons, Albert and Gunnar (Lynda) grandchildren, Gunnar Bryon (Charito), Jennifer and Colleen; great-grandchildren, Sigurd and Leifur; brothers, Marino and Marcel. Sig was predeceased by his wife of 52 years, Joleen; parents Jonatan and Imba; brothers, John and Einar; sisters, Heida and Lara. Born in Gimli on July 2, 1918, he grew up in Riverton and as a young man fished on Lake Winnipeg until 1942 when he joined the Royal Canadian Air Force. After the war, he attended the University of Manitoba and graduated with Bachelor of Commerce (Honors). He worked at Great West Life until his retirement in 1982. Sig and Joleen were married on October 4, 1942. They were members of First Lutheran Church. They enjoyed many summers at Hecla Island, visiting with relatives and friends. After retiring, they travelled through Europe on several occasions, to Australia and Iceland and wintered in Florida. A funeral service will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, November 12 at First Lutheran Church, 580 Victor St., with Pastor Michael Kurtz officiating.
