PETER KOLBA May 19, 1925 - November 8, 2002 It is with great sadness we announce the passing of Peter. While surrounded by his wife and family, he passed away peacefully after a very courageous battle with cancer. Peter is survived by his wife of 16 years, Dorothy, his children, Susan (Barry) McLarty, Tom (Joanne) Kolba, Margaret Kolba (Don Wilkinson), Peter (Gayle) Kolba, Chris (Michele) Kolba, and Kathy (John) Chilton; his grandchildren, Ian, Jennifer, Hayley, Jodi, Lynn, Danny, Leanne, Lindsey, Brett, Rachell, Jessie and Tia; his son-in-law Larry Zakaluk; his sister Anne (Bill) Menzies; and brother George (Joyce) Kolba. Peter is also survived by Dorothys children, Bruce (Cathy) Haggart, Margaret Thompson (Ed Thiessen) and his grandchildren, Adam, Trevor (Dawna) Brendan, Jeremy and Jaime. Peter also leaves to mourn his passing many nieces and nephews and his lifelong and best friends, Tony and Agnes Barchuk and Steve Crane. Peter was predeceased by his mother Violet, his father Stephen, his first wife Cecilia (nee Stadther), his daughter Theresa Zakaluk, sisters, Sue and Gerry; and brothers, John, Bill and Mike. Honorary pallbearers will be his three sons, three grandsons, and friends, Tony and Steve. Peter enlisted in the army (Engineers) as a teen and retired a Staff Sergeant in 1966. He then worked for the Solicitor Generals Department at Stony Mountain Penitentiary. Not quite ready for retirement he continued working for the City of Winnipeg Housing Authority until 1985. Peter led a full and very satisfying life. He met and married Cecilia in 1947 and they were happily married for 38 years. Throughout the early years of their marriage, the family had many, many adventures throughout Canada. Once Peter moved to Winnipeg, he developed a love for family camping trips and many nights were spent around the campfire with his family and friends, singing, telling stories and laughing. He loved being with his friends playing cards until all hours of the night. He curled, bowled, and gardened. He developed a love for photography and golf and developed many more friendships. He was famous for his Glayva parties. He enjoyed his boys night out with Tony and Steve. In 1986 he met Dorothy Haggart and was married shortly after, inheriting more children and grandchildren to his great delight. He loved telling everyone about his 17 grandchildren. Being a big kid at heart, he started into seasonal house decorations to thrill all the children and it soon became a huge-time consuming passion. He would chuckle when cars stopped in front of his house at Christmas to look at all his lights. He was very involved with the Royal Canadian Legion #9, the Canadian German Society, the Knights of Columbus, East Kildonan Council 4107 and the Centennial Seniors Group. Peters sense of humour, laughter and huge heart will be greatly missed and yet will carry on in our memories. He will be missed. "The bus has left" Prayers will be held on Thursday, November 14 at St. Alphonsus Roman Catholic Church, 300 Munroe Ave. at 7:00 p.m. and a Memorial Mass celebrating the life of Peter will be held on Friday, November 15 at 11:00 a.m. A reception will follow at St. Alphonsus Hall with a private interment at Brookside Cemetery.
