RUSSEL HARLING It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Russel Harling of Winnipeg November 11, 2002. Russ lived a full life as a family man, businessman and veteran of the Second World War. Russ will be sadly missed by his wife Dorothy; sister-in-law Joan Walker; son Ralph and wife Suzanne, (Sean and Alex, Scott and Heather) daughter Susan and husband George Siamandas, (Peter) son Fred and wife Chrys, (Danielle, Vanessa, Alexander, and Matthew) daughter Rosemary and husband Gary Chapman; and son Jon and wife Janet of Kelowna. Russ was predeceased by his father Ralph Edward in 1957, his mother Agnes in 1966, and sister Grace Bleeks in 1973. Russ was born in Montreal June 20, 1912, his family moving to Winnipeg in 1923 Russ joined his father in business in the 1930s and operated Harling Mill Agencies well into his 70s. Russ joined the Canadian Air Force August 31, 1939 and went overseas February 25, 1940 as a member of the 110th Squadron. Russ survived two ditchings in the North Sea, one on July 2, 1942, the second on February 27, 1943 where he spent 22 hours in the bitterly cold water. He was awarded the DFC, was a member of the goldfish club, and was a proud member of AA for 50 years. Russ was an avid gardener, a delight he continued to enjoy right till the end. Roses, lilies and all forms of perennials were his favourites. Funeral will be held at 1:00 p.m. Friday, November 15 at Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. A reception will follow at The Army Navy and Air Force Veterans, Fort Garry Unit No. 60, 279 Garry St. If desired, donations in memory of Russel may be made to the charity of your choice.
