IGNACE COLTON (1922 - 2002) Peacefully, on November 14, 2002, after a brief illness at St. Boniface Hospital, Ignace Colton left us to join his beloved wife Pauline and son Gregory. He will be deeply missed by his surviving son Philip (Karen and her daughter Valerie) daughter-in-law Suzanne (Gregory) and grandchildren, Christian (Melanie) and Neil. He also leaves to mourn his brothers, Stanley, Mike, Andrew, Peter; and sister Anne; their spouses and numerous nieces and nephews. Ignace was born in Thalberg, MB on October 17, 1922 and worked on the family farm until setting out on his own for the shores of Superior and the cargo ships of Fort William. A man of ambition and many talents, his travels took him to British Columbia where he worked as a lumberjack (where he won competitions with his trusty old axe) before returning to Winnipeg, where he met and married his wife of 50 years, Pauline, and raised his family. Ignace worked in the garment industry as a cutter for over 30 years, and was very active in the International Ladies Garment Workers Union, where he became a shop steward. During this time, he and Pauline also worked as market gardeners on their farm for over ten years. Although disabled by a stroke, Ignace took an interest in all that surrounded him and contributed his knowledge and advice to all who asked. He loved to read, especially books on history and deeply respected his Ukrainian heritage. Ignace was a kind, hardworking, loving father and husband and will be sorely missed by all who knew him. Funeral service will be held on Tuesday, November 19 at 10:00 a.m. at Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave. Interment will follow at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. Our sincere thanks to the staff at St. Boniface Hospital who treated Ignace with kindness, grace and dignity during his stay. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6 or to CancerCare Manitoba, 109-675 McDermot Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 0J7.
