LAYLA ANN GRANT (STERN) It is with profound sadness we announce the passing of Layla Grant, our beloved mother, boba, sister, aunt, friend and inspiration. Her courageous struggle with cancer ended peacefully in the early morning hours of Wednesday, November 6, 2002 with her daughter Karen and cousin Bruce by her side at the Palliative Care Unit, St. Boniface Hospital. Mourning her loss is her daughter Karen; son Jason (Judy) grandchildren, JoAnne, Joshua, Jacob, all of Calgary; and her special friend and daughter Elaine Stoller of Winnipeg. Also feeling the sadness and loss are her brothers, Mel Stern (Effie) of Moose Jaw, SK, Walter Stern of Winnipeg, Gerald Stern (Sheila) of Vancouver, BC, Allan Stern (Donni) of Winnipeg; and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins and many, many, loving friends. Her parents, Joseph and Bessie; her brother Cyril; and her sister-in-law Zora, predeceased Mom. Our mother was a woman of great valour and strength. In the words of her niece, Deb, at the funeral, "If you were lucky enough to be loved by Auntie Layla you know that she had the convincing way of nagging you - letting you know whats best for you. She was also very tactful about it. She kept it simple and clear; three four maybe five sentences and she would only say it once. Then no matter how hard youd try, you couldnt get her voice out of your head. The funny part is she was ALWAYS right." Mom was humble and real; incredible and selfless; a friend and confidant to all; a listener and advisor; stubborn and witty; strong and independent; forgiving and loving. She left us all with so many wondrous gifts and this legacy will be with us always. Graveside services were held Thursday, November 7, at Shaarey Zedek Cemetery, Rabbi Alan Green officiated. Pallbearers were Bill Sklover, Morley Wiseman, Zachary Chernick, George Dodds, Wayne Gelfant, and Elaine Stoller. The family would like to thank the staff at Palliative Care Unit, St Boniface Hospital. To the "special angels" (you know who you are) we send our deepest appreciation. In lieu of flowers, should you desire, donations can be made in Laylas memory to the Palliative Care Unit, St. Boniface Hospital, The Canadian Cancer Society, or a charity of your choice.
