RHYS WILLIAM JONES, MSM, BA (Hons) LL.B. Rhys Jones died of cancer November 8, 2002 at age 52 in St. Boniface Hospital. He was first diagnosed and underwent major surgery in the spring of 1996. Over the next six and one half years he fought the disease while continuing his precedent setting work in the advancement of aboriginal land claims. He is survived by three daughters, Bronwyn, Brekyn (Warren Krevesky) and Rachel; his parents, Ethel and Harlo Jones; sister Kathryn (Douglas Sprague) brother Maldwyn; nieces, Nelly and Laura; and nephew Emmanuel. Rhys received his post-secondary education at Carleton University and Osgoode Hall Law School. While studying at Carleton he joined the Governor Generals Foot Guards and after receiving his commission, commanded the GGFG parades on Parliament Hill through the summer of 1969. After receiving his BA (Anthropology) he worked for the Department of Indian and Northern Affairs participating in the negotiation of The James Bay Agreement of 1975. He then went on to law school to play a more direct role in the advancement of aboriginal land claims in the provinces of Ontario and Manitoba. In September 2000 his work on behalf of aboriginal communities won recognition in the award of the Meritorious Service Medal presented to him by the Governor General in a ceremony held in Quebec City. The accompanying scroll stated, in part, "Through his commitment, Mr. Jones is ensuring that aboriginal peoples have a right to a contemporary place in Canadian life and that their contribution to the life of our nation is safeguarded." In September 2002 an Honour Song was performed for Rhys during a pow-wow at Stanjikoming First Nation for his contribution to the growth and development of the community over the past 20 years. Rhyss family would like to extend their appreciation to Stanjikoming First Nation for their kindness and support. Rhyss family and invited guests will honour his memory privately November 18.
