GRACE EVELYN MARTIN Peacefully, on November 16, 2002, Grace Martin passed away at the age of 89 years. Grace will be greatly missed by Margaret Martin, her close friend for the past 70 years; her two nephews, Jim Martin (Barbara) and Don Martin (Karen) her niece Cathy Quiring (Jacob) and her 7 great-nephews and nieces. Grace was born in Crystal City and grew up on the family farm that has homesteaded by her grandfather and which is still farmed by her nephew Jim. She attended Wesley College (which is now the University of Winnipeg) and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Education during the Great Depression. Grace taught in Roblin, MB, then moved back to Winnipeg in 1942 to teach at Riverbend School (now Balmoral Hall). She lived with Margaret and her mother. Grace and Margaret became great friends, both eventually taught at Gordon Bell School (Grace was head of the Mathematics Department), and for close to 40 years shared a house on Dowker Avenue where they made many friends. Grace was a keen competitor in many activities including curling, bowling, golf, bridge and even gardening. Many friends and family enjoyed her glads and tomatoes. She held memberships in various curling clubs, the Niakwa Golf Club, and the Wildwood Club, typically serving on the Executive of any club she joined. A lifelong traveler, she and Margaret travelled extensively after retirement from Gordon Bell School in 1973 and their travels (often with various friends) included the Orient, Australia, Europe, Mexico, Alaska, Jamaica, various cruises, and their personal favourite place, Hawaii. With an active social life and a wide group of friends, Grace led a full life. She was a respected educator and always a leader. Grace became ill four years ago and has required personal care. The family would like to thank the staff of the Convalescent Home of Winnipeg for their wonderful care. They have been a blessing to us. A memorial service will be held on Tuesday, November 19, at 10:00 a.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made in memory of Grace to a charity of individual choice. THOMSON FUNERAL CHAPELS 783-7211
