FRED ELAM It is with great sadness the family of Fred Elam announces his passing on November 21, 2002, at the Deer Lodge Centre. He was born in Dewsbury, Yorkshire, England on May 10, 1919. In 1926 Fred came to Canada with his family, moving to Storthoaks, SK. He received his education at Broomhill, MB. He joined the Royal Canadian Army, South Saskatchewan Regiment where he served over seas from October 1939 to July 1945. Fred married Christena Leah (nee Russell) in December 1945. They moved to Waskada, MB, where they owned and operated a bakery/confectionery until April 1958. Fred served as mayor of Waskada and was also active in the volunteer fire brigade. He rejoined the Royal Canadian Army in April 1958 serving in Winnipeg until he retired in September 1969. He then operated the kitchen at Central Park Lodge from 1969 to 1984 when he retired. He was predeceased by his parents, his brother Albert and sister Edith Weidenhamer. Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife Christena; daughter Bette Joan; son Bert (wife Debbie) grandchildren, Joe (wife Tina), Dan (wife Laurie), Thea (husband Greg), Sarah and Michael; great-grandchildren, Princeton, Treasure, River, Melody, Patrick, Amber, and Dusty; also his sister Florence Hall; and numerous nieces and nephews. Fred was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather. His greatest enjoyment was time spent with his family and visits from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Cremation will take place at Chapel Lawn Memorial Gardens. No memorial service will be held. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Manitoba Heart and Stroke Foundation, 6 Donald St., Suite 200, Winnipeg, MB R3L 0K6. Family expresses their deepest thanks to the staff of Deer Lodge Centre for their kindness and thoughtfulness to Fred and the family.
