ROBERT MELVIN AWREY Robert Melvin Awrey passed away quietly at Health Sciences Centre in Winnipeg on November 29, 2002. He is survived by his loving wife Peg of 58 years. Also surviving him are his brother Milton (Barbara) and several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Bert (Irene), Lindsay (Hilda and Kit) by sisters, Margaret See (Percy), and Bernice Stewart (Max). Mel was born on June 4, 1910 and spent his early years at Myrtle on the farm. In 1944 he married Peggy Miller of Carman, and remained on the farm until they built their home in Roland. After he quit farming he worked for PFAA, travelling all over Manitoba meeting many people whom he never forgot. For many years Mel and Peg spent their winters in Mesa, AZ making new friends. In 2000 they moved to Boyne Towers in Carman. As a young man he was active in baseball as a player, a coach and an umpire. Curling was another of his favourite sports and he became an honorary life member of the Roland Curling Club. He was the secretary of the Roland Agricultural for 10 years. At Mels request cremation has taken place. A private graveside service will be held at the Roland Cemetery on Tuesday, December 3, with Chuck Ross officiating. A reception for family and friends will follow in the Roland Memorial Hall at 2:30 p.m. Mel will be sadly missed by all who knew him, for his knowledge and his memory that stayed with him to his last day. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Boyne Lodge, Box 1644, Carman, MB R0G 0J0. Doyles Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements.
