GEORGE EWERT After a brief illness in hospital, George Ewert, of Winnipeg, MB passed away on November 30, 2002, at the age of 81. He was born to Gerhard and Maria (Dick) Ewert on September 19, 1921 in Russia. They immigrated to Mexico in 1924, and later resettled in southern Manitoba in 1926. He began working as a school teacher in 1941, a profession in which he continued until his retirement in 1979. In 1948, he married Hilda Wiebe, who remained the love of his life until his death. They settled in Steinbach in 1951, where they raised their seven children. Dad was a very active member of the Steinbach Mennonite Brethren Church for over 25 years, where he served as a lay minister, Sunday school teacher, board member, and choir member, among other areas. His love for God and for the Church was impressed upon his family and his community throughout his time there. In 1979, Dad and Mom left Steinbach to begin a new adventure in Largo, Florida, where he worked with Project Lookup for over six years, until they moved for the final time to Winnipeg in 1986. After settling in North Kildonan, Dad and Mom spent many happy years together watching their children and grandchildren grow, and actively participating in several different church congregations and ministries. In particular, Dad found great fulfilment volunteering his time and talents at Family Life Network. Dad and Mom traveled frequently so that they could remain close to family. He placed great importance on being a loving presence in all their lives. He was instrumental in helping many others to grow in personal relationships with God, and his spiritual example will continue to be a comfort and inspiration to the many lives he touched. George will be very greatly missed by Hilda, his wife and partner of 54 years; two daughters and five sons and their families, Richard (Lynne) of Mannheim, Germany, Ruth of Toronto, ON, Joyce of Winnipeg, MB, Bert (Leona) of Abbotsford, BC, Bernie (Shirley) of Bezanson, AB, Peter (Diane) of Winnipeg, MB, and Don (Wendy) of Mitchell, ON. He is survived by 16 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, two sisters, Elizabeth Ewert of Winnipeg, Helen Derksen of Winnipeg, and a large extended family. He was predeceased by five brothers, three sisters, and one grandson. The funeral service for George Ewert will be held on Wednesday, December 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the Elmwood Mennonite Brethren Church, 145 Henderson Hwy., Winnipeg. Interment will be at Glen Eden Memorial Gardens, 4477 Main St., West St. Paul. Viewing and visitation will take place at Elmwood MB Church on Tuesday, December 3, from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Family Life Network, 225 Riverton Ave., Winnipeg, MB R2L 0N1. The family would like to thank Dr. J. Regehr, Dr. P. Harris, Dr. C. Yeung and the compassionate staff at Concordia Hospital, for the care they provided during Dads last days. Funeral arrangements are entrusted to Birchwood Funeral Home, Steinbach.
