ROSE PAYETTE, SNJM (SISTER DENIS-DE-JESUS) On Sunday, December 1, 2002, Sister Rose Payette passed away at Residence Jesus-Marie, St. Boniface. Born in St. Leon, MB in 1914, of Josephine (Landreville) and Esdras Fayette, Rose is the eighth child in a family of 13 children; nine girls and four boys. Rose always spoke highly of her close knit family. They lived very frugally on a farm in St. Leon. Sister Rose delighted in recalling how brotherly and sisterly love prevailed in all of their activities and how the family prayed together daily. Roses first nine years of schooling were spent in the St. Leon Elementary School under the direction of the Sisters Chanoinesses Regulieres des Cinq-Plaies (who are now called Soeurs du Sauveur). Then Rose became a boarder in St. Jean-Baptiste Convent, where the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary were teaching. After her graduation, in July 1933, she entered the novitiate of the Sisters of the Holy Names, in Outremont, Quebec. Six months later, when she took the veil, she was happily given the name Sister Denis-de-Jesus, "Denis" being the first name of the youngest child in her beautiful and numerous family. In August 1935, Sister Denis took her vows in the chapel of the mother house of the Sisters of the Holy Names and returned to Manitoba. Concurrently, as she pursued her studies, she taught primary grades for 20 years, then high school for 20 years. Her career as an educator was spent in various Holy Names schools, mainly in Manitoba; parochial schools, public shools, St. Marys Academy private institution, Flin Flon and in Kenora, ON. Endowed with great creativity and resourcefulness and somewhat daring, Sister Denis used her giftedness for the benefit of her students, particularly so in the areas of practical arts and home economics. Her last three years of teaching were spent in Churchill, MB, where she taught most efficiently Home Economics classes in the Duke of Marlborough High School. Upon her return to Winnipeg and St. Boniface, Sister Rose served her Order in several of their dwellings. In spite of failing health, she enjoyed participating in a variety of new activities. Thus, she spent six months in Outremont, Quebec, where she worked in the Marie-Rose Centre. How happy she was to be handling a variety of items and souvenirs linked to Blessed Marie-Rose Durocher, foundress of the Sisters of the Holy Names. For almost one year Sister Rose lived in Cap-Rouge, Quebec where she took courses in spirituality. When in May 1998, she became a permanent patient in the Residence Jesus-Marie infirmary, she found the days endless. She longed for her freedom, to do as she pleased and without relying on others. Gradually, her mental and physical strengths waned, so much so that she had to spend her days either in a wheelchair or in bed. For the past few days Sisters condition had been deteriorating rapidly as she waited serenely for the Lords final call. Sister Rose leaves to mourn her passing one beloved brother, Denis, from Winnipeg; one sister-in-law, Elodie Payette, Somerset, MB; one brother-in-law, Aime Bessette, Edmonton; many nieces and nephews and the members of her religious Order. She was predeceased by three brothers, Henri, Arthur and Albert; her eight sisters, Florina, Soeur du Sauveur; Honora Jubinville (Antonin) Marie-Louise Leblanc (Raymond) Marie-Ange Warsaba (Michael) Eva Silverton (Tim) Melina North (Eric) Cecile Fraser, Florence Bessette (Aime). The Sisters at the Residence extend their appreciation to Dr. Kevin Coates for his unwavering attention in caring for Sister Roses health needs and to the infirmary staff for the unrelentless compassion and care they have showered upon her throughout these last four and one half years. Prayers will be held at Residence Jesus-Marie, 321 Cathedrale Av. St. Boniface, on Wednesday, December 4 at 7:30 p.m. Also at this same address, the funeral service, officiated by Fr. Robert Campeau, will be on Thursday, December 5, at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow in the St. Boniface Cemetery on Archibald Street. Desjardins Funeral Chapel in care of arrangements 233-4949; or toll free 1-888-233-4949.

For some reason, today I was thinking about Sister Rose and the other Sisters who were great teachers and mentors during my youth. Sister Rose was my Home Economics teacher in Churchill, Manitoba in the 1970s. She was also my catechism teacher where we would go to her apartment for classes then watch 'Edge of Night' and make dinner. As I write this she has been gone for almost 10 years and I still want to send her family, wherever they may be, my deep condolences. Rest in the arms of our Lord, dear Sister Rose. - Posted by: Gwen Lequire (former student) on: Jul 19, 2012
