VICTOR JASEN (Jasienawiez) Victor was born in Reczyza Gomel, Belarus on April 5, 1924. As a youth, he survived poverty and hunger in Stalinist Russia. Then, as a young man, he endured wartime forced labour in Germany. After the end of the Second World War, he married Tatjana, his high school sweetheart and the following year, his first son was born. In 1948, he left his small family behind in Germany in order to prepare a new home for them in Canada. He began by working underground at the Giant Renabi Gold Mine in Northern Ontario. By 1949, when he was able to bring over his bride and small son, he had singlehandedly built their first home - a log cabin hewn from the surrounding pine forest. In 1950, looking for a better future, they all moved to Winnipeg where, in 1952, his second son was born. Future years would bring three wonderful grandchildren and his eyes would always light up in their presence. Victor worked for several years at General Window Products and for 14 years with the Winnipeg School Division Number One, from which he retired in 1989. He was a good and loving father and husband. He made certain that his sons knew the meaning of family and he always tried to provide them with all of the advantages his limited means would allow even if it meant that he would have to go without. He was handsome, dignified and generous in spirit to the end and an enthusiastic mushroom picker. Victor died quietly and peacefully in the early hours of December 3, 2002 at the Seven Oaks General Hospital He was predeceased by his loving wife Tatjana, his parents Eugene and Helena, and his brother Alex. He is survived by his son Alec, daughter-in-law Bonnie and their children Paul and Megan; his son George, daughter-in-law Deborah and their children Michael and Nicole; brother Barry and wife Irene in Brisbane Australia; sister Anuita in Melbourne, Australia; brother-in-law John Buraconak and his wife Luba; sister-in-law Irene Buraconak of Detroit Michigan; several nieces and nephews; good friends Walter and Olga Jasen and his very special friend Jean Raczenko.
