Lawrie was born in Winnipeg on August 23, 1912. He graduated from Kelvin High School and worked as an underground miner in the West Hawk area. When the mine closed, he delivered for the Coca Cola Company throughout the rural areas of Manitoba. During the Second World War, Lawrie was denied military service for medical reasons, so he did defence contract work with Canada Car Ltd in Fort William, ON. Lawrie joined Trans Canada Airlines (Air Canada) as a machinist and worked his way up to the Millwright shop. He was highly skilled in his field. After completing almost 35 years with the company, Lawrie retired to Lac Du Bonnet. During his retirement, he worked for the atomic energy plant in Pinawa and was "Mr. Fix It" for friends and neighbours. Lawrie was an active member of the Masonic Lodge and the Machinist Union. Lawrie had a wonderful sense of humour and made friends wherever he went. He was a "character"! He loved his family unconditionally and was always there to help us out in his own inimitable style. He was generous in so many ways - helping anyone in need. He loved children and adored his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He especially loved being with Marium at the cottage at White Mud Falls and enjoyed wintering in Tucson, Arizona where they had made many friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 7 at 2:30 p.m. in Thomson Funeral Chapels, 669 Broadway. The family wishes to thank Dr. K. Pickard, Misericordia Health Care Unit and the nursing staff at Riverview for their sensitive care.
