ANNE ERRINGTON OAKES (nee YOUNG) Mum passed away very peacefully at the Victoria General Hospital the afternoon of December 6, 2002 in her 95th year. She is survived by her daughters, Ruth (Angus) MacDonald of Coquitlam, BC, Mabel Hill of Winnipeg, and Edith (Peter) Fiarchuk of Steinbach, MB. Also surviving her are her eight granddaughters, Heather, Donna-Lynne, Sandra, Alexis, Katherine, Sara-Ann, Sherri and Jolene; as well as ten great-grandchildren. Her brother Stuart Young and his wife Mary survive her; as well as her sister-in-law Alma Young, all of Manitou, MB. Numerous nieces and nephews also survive her. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas Oakes in 1977; her two brothers, Alex and John Young; her sister Margaret Dobson; and son-in-law Court Hill. Mum was born on a farm south of Manitou on January 18, 1908 and lived there until 1919 when the family moved to Vancouver. She fell in love with British Columbia and the mountains during the two years that she lived there. The family returned to Manitou, Middleton District, where she lived until her marriage in March 1937. She then resided at her husbands farm near Miami, MB, where she raised her family. After dads death she moved into a house in Miami until the fall of 2000 when she moved into the Rosewood Village in Winnipeg. She enjoyed two wonderful years full of friendship, caring and companionship in Briarwood House at the Rosewood Village, remaining there until she went into the hospital a few weeks before her death. Mum lived a very full and active life, both on the farm and in the community. In addition to raising three daughters and all the activities involved in family life she had many other interests. Her work with the church was an important part of her life, she especially enjoyed her involvement with the Womens Groups as well as teaching Sunday School. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, participating in their many activities. She was a member of both the Miami Horticultural and Agricultural Societies and took great pride in her lovely yard and garden, particularly her roses. Mum observed and enjoyed the changing colours of the seasons as they unfolded. As a long-time member of the Miami Art Club she painted and exhibited for many years and never ceased to find immense joy in her art. In later life she had opportunities to travel and took full advantage of them. An accomplishment she was very proud of was being able to visit every province and territory in Canada as well her many trips to foreign destinations. Her final trip was to Coquitlam, BC with her daughter Mabel to visit Ruth and her family for Thanksgiving and to say goodbye to her beloved mountains. The family would like to thank the staff of Unit 5 at the Victoria General Hospital for their care and compassion during her stay with them. Also, we would like to thank the staff and residents of Briarwood House at the Rosewood Village who made Mums last years so full of joy, and friendship. Funeral services are being arranged by Doyles Funeral Home in Carman and will be held at Miami United Church on Tuesday, December 10 at 2:00 p.m. Interment in the Miami cemetery. No flowers by request, in lieu of flowers please make a donation to the Miami United Church or to a charity of your choice in her memory.
