DAPHNE SHIRLEY SCHWARTZ
Date of Passing: Dec 08, 2002
Send Flowers to the Family Offer Condolences or MemoryDAPHNE SHIRLEY SCHWARTZ Daphne Schwartz, beloved wife of Arthur, passed away suddenly at home on Sunday, December 8, 2002. She is survived by her husband of 54 years; her children, Barton (Mollie McVey), Brent (Kathy), Ainsley Williams (Dan), Alyson (Allan Baumbick), Blair; and grandchildren, Andrea, Bradley Taylor, Matthew, Amanda, Jake; and several nieces and nephews. Her children and grand-children were most important in her life. Daphne was predeceased by her parents, John and Catherine Wolfe; her sisters, Catherine Bell (Henry), Edythe Reeve (Reg) and her brother John (Anne), who was killed in Italy in the Second World War. Daphne received her education in Kenora and entered the work force there. That is where she met Arthur. They were married in 1948. Following her marriage, Daphne lived in Kenora, Winnipeg and other centres. She was always supportive of the many career moves they made. While they travelled extensively throughout Canada, the United States and Europe, for her there was no other place equal to the Lake of the Woods. During the last few years of her life, when she was not able to play golf, swim, fish, or travel on the lake as much as she would have liked, she derived comfort, satisfaction and enjoyment from the vantage point of the living room of the family cottage on Coney Island looking out, in her words "the best scenery in the world." She was able to check the weather, the traffic on the lake, the activities of familiar and unfamiliar boats, and the numerous ducks and humming birds, which she insisted had to be adequately fed. Her love for nature, all animals, as well as her knowledge of trees and flowers was well known. She attributed much of this knowledge to the teaching technique of a primary school teacher. Her special friend for the last nine years, her collie dog "Jessie" will miss the love and attention which was frequently sought and received from Daphne every day. Daphne had a warm, outgoing manner, and could quickly get a response and, generally a smile or laugh, even from a new acquaintance. It was said by some that she could probably make a sphinx talk. She made numerous friends in various parts of the country and maintained contact with many of them up to the end. Her telephone was an important aide in her daily routine. Scrabble games with sister-in-law Irma could go on for hours. Meal time and other less important functions could be delayed until the game was finished. For many years, Daphne enjoyed playing golf and, when she could no longer play, she followed the sport closely on T.V. She was interested in arts, crafts and painting. She was well known for her enthusiastic collection of recipes and cook books. She especially enjoyed her wonderful collection of old cook books. Passing by an auction or garage sale and not stopping was unforgivable to her. The family wishes to thank Dr. Cyril Woolfe, her family physician Dr. R. Mehta, Dr. A. Maksymiuk, nurse Mona Wilfer and all the staff at CancerCare for their warm, caring and considerate attention over the past seven months. A reception to celebrate her life will be held at the Neil Bardal Inc., 984 Portage Ave., Aubrey Street entrance, Saturday, December 14 at 1:00 p.m. In accordance with Daphnes wishes, cremation has taken place. Interment at a later date in the family plot in Lake of the Woods Cemetery. If friends so wish, donations would be appreciated to any of her favourite charities: Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, 1101 - 191 Lombard Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3B 0K1; Childrens Wish Foundation, 350 St. Mary Ave., Winnipeg, MB R3C 3J2; CancerCare Manitoba, P.O. Box 2248, Winnipeg, MB R3C 4A6. "If there is another world, she lives in bliss If there is none, she made the most of this" Robert Burns NEIL BARDAL INC. 949-2200
