JOHN M. COOK It is with great sorrow we announce the passing of John Melbourne Cook on Sunday, December 8, 2002 at the age of 93 at Victoria General Hospital. Surviving to cherish his memory are his loving wife Florence May, daughter Joan May, and son Jack (John) Frank, all of Winnipeg. He was born in Winnipeg, February 27, 1909. He attended Young United Sunday School and later St. Lukes Young Mens Club under the leadership of Judge Hamilton. John attended Mulvey School, Kelvin Technical High School and Wesley College Collegiate. He joined The Royal Bank of Canada on January 4, 1929 and worked at a number of branches in Manitoba and Northwestern Ontario. John was Manager at Erickson, MB 1951 to 1952. He was appointed the Districts first Routine Officer and eventually became District Manager of Branch Operations. John retired February 27, 1969. He served as an Ammunition Examiner in The Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps in the Second World War and was Magazine Foreman at Camp Shilo and later at Nanaimo, BC. John was an ardent Genealogist. He was President of the United Empire Loyalists Association for a number of terms. The Cook Family were United Empire Loyalists on both sides. Two of the main buildings in Upper Canada Pioneer Village at Morrisburg, ON belonged to the family. Cooks Tavern and the Doctors House. He was one of the original members of St. Peters Anglican Church and was a regular attendant until ill health prevented attendance. John was also an honorary member of the church vestry and also served as envelope secretary. His tireless work was so apparent in the early days of St. Peters. During his retirement John had many hobbies that included stamp collecting, sports cards collecting and he was able to be proficient on the computer. He loved music and was a regular season ticket holder to the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra. John was an avid sports enthusiast all his life from playing baseball to the enjoyment of being a sports fan. He attended some of the Goldeye games up until this year. A memorial service will be held on Thursday, December 12, at 1:00 p.m. at St. Peters Anglican Church on the corner of Grant Avenue and Elm Street. Special thanks to Dr. J. Walli and the nurses and staff on the 5th floor who cared for John at the hospital. In lieu of flowers, if friends so desire, donations may be made to a charity of your choice.
