WALLACE (WALLY) EVERETT JONES April 21, 1924 - December 8, 2002 With deep sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend. Wally was born in Carlyle, SK to William and Mary Jones, and when he was seven years old the family moved to Winnipeg, where he was raised and educated. In 1943 he joined the 12th Manitoba Dragoons and he served his country in France, Belgium, Holland and Germany until the end of the war. After he was discharged in 1946 he returned to Winnipeg, where he met and married Martha (Marty) Elvira Peterson. In 1949 Wally joined the Winnipeg Fire Department, where he served with distinction until his retirement as a captain in 1985. He always took great pride in his duties as a firefighter and he valued the many friendships he formed in the Fire Department. Wally was especially proud when his son, Murray, joined the Fire Department in 1982. Wally loved to spend time with his family and he cherished the many wonderful summers they shared in Bird River, boating, fishing and working around the cottage. He always looked forward to attending the football games, hockey games, concerts and other activities in which his children and grandchildren participated. After his retirement, Wally and Marty enjoyed their winter holidays in Hawaii. Left to cherish his memory is Wallys wife of 56 years Marty; daughter Marlene (Nick) son Murray; grandsons, Blair Szymczyna and Corey Szymczyna (Kelly) granddaughters, Brittany and Jessica; great-granddaughter Caitlin; sister Mary Beatty; and many nieces, nephews and friends. Wally was predeceased by his parents, William and Mary; sister Florence Dickinson; and brothers, Al, Bill, Kenny, Chuck and Ronnie. The family thanks all the doctors, nurses and staff at St. Boniface General Hospital and in particular those in SICU, CCU and on the 5th floor, for their care, support and compassion. In accordance with Wallys wishes cremation and interment will take place privately, with family present. A memorial service to commemorate and celebrate Wallys life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, December 12, at the Chapel Lawn Funeral Home, 4000 Portage Ave., with Chaplain Mark Young of the Winnipeg Fire Department and Paramedic Service to officiate. Members of the Winnipeg Fire Department will serve as an Honour Guard. Honorary pallbearers are Ray Staples, Hugh Scott, Blair Szymczyna, Corey Szymczyna, Nick Trusewych and Bruce Beatty. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Firefighters Burn Fund, Room 308 - 83 Garry St., Winnipeg, MB R3C 4J9. The lifetime of love and wonderful memories We shared will live forever in our hearts. You never asked for favours Yet you did them every day. You never asked for help Yet you gave so much away. You never asked for gratitude, And yet our whole life through Well always be so grateful Just to have had your love and you.
